Nebraska Upsets No. 71 Wyoming

Lincoln - The Nebraska women's tennis team ran its season-opening win streak to six straight with a 4-3 upset of No. 71 Wyoming on Sunday in front of a big crowd at the Sid and Dillon Hazel Tennis Center.

Nebraska (6-0) closed out a perfect 3-0 weekend with its closest match of the season. The Huskers started strong, winning a close doubles point which proved to be the difference.

Katerina Matysova and Mackenna Maddox-Herr posted a 6-0 victory at No. 3 doubles, but Wyoming pulled even with its own 6-0 win at the No. 1 spot. The doubles point came down to the No. 2 spot, where Mary Hanna and Vasanti Shinde displayed great teamwork to earn a close 6-4 victory over Wyoming's Elisa Koonik and Tessa van Der Ploeg.

With the doubles point secured, Nebraska turned its attention to singles play. Wyoming won three of the first five singles matches, and the match game down to who would win the battle at No. 6 singles between Maddox-Herr and the Cowgirls' Miranda Talbert. Maddox-Herr won the opening set, 7-5, before Talbert bounced back with a 6-3 victory in the second set. With all other matches completed and a team win on the line, Maddox-Herr secured the victory for Nebraska with a dominating 6-1 win in the third and decisive set.

Prior to the drama provided by the final match, Nebraska got big wins from Hanna at the No. 3 spot and from Matysova at the No. 4 spot. Hannah was a straight-set winner over Dorottya Jones, pulling out a close 7-6, 6-3 win. Matysova defeated Wyoming's Tessa van Der Ploeg, 6-1, 6-3, to set the stage for Maddox-Herr's dramatic win.

Maddox-Herr, Matysova and Hanna all posted 2-0 records on Sunday to power Nebraska to the win.

Following Sunday's dramatic win, the Huskers will try to take down another ranked team next Saturday, when Nebraska hosts No. 34 Wichita State at the Dillon Tennis Center. The dual begins at 11 a.m. and admission is free. Live scoring will also be available on Huskers.com.
