Nebraska Wins Twice Friday, Improves to 5-0

Lincoln - The Nebraska women's tennis team stretched its season-opening win streak to five with a pair of victories over Creighton and UMKC Friday at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.

The Huskers opened the day with a 6-1 victory over Creighton before sweeping UMKC, 7-0, in the second match of the day. Nebraska has dominated in starting the season 5-0, allowing only one opponent to score more than one point.

Individually, Maggy Lehmicke, Lisa Andersson, Mary Hanna and Vasante Shinde all went 2-0 in singles play. Hanna and Shinde also won both matches Friday at the No. 2 doubles spot. Mackenna Maddox-Herr also posted multiple wins, earning a doubles victory against Creighton and a singles win vs. UMKC.

Against Creighton, Nebraska quickly claimed the doubles point when Hanna and Shinde blanked the Bluejays' Katherine Nelson and Karlin Naslund at the No. 2 spot. Maddox-Herr then teamed with Sydney Harlow for a 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot to clinch the doubles point.

In singles play, four of the Huskers' five victories came via a sweep. Lehmicke and Andersson posted identical 6-1, 6-1, victories and the No. 1 and 2 spots, respectively. Hanna earned a 6-1, 6-2 win over Creighton's Darbie Rosette at No. 3 singles, while Shinde held off the Bluejays' Clair Embree, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot.

Nebraska's final victory against Creighton was hard-fought battle between the Huskers' Elizabeth Gould - making her collegiate debut - and Creighton's Ashley Monaco at No. 6 singles. Gould took the first set by a score of 6-4, before Gould pulled even with a 7-6 tiebreaker win in set two. The third set also went to a tiebreaker, with Gould earning a 10-8 victory.

The Huskers kept their momentum going against UMKC. Nebraska won the doubles point by virtue of a second win by Hanna and Shinde at the No. 2 spot and a forfeit by the Kangaroos at the No. 3 spot.

Nebraska then dominated singles action, winning five matches via sweep and one match by forfeit. Lehmicke capped her strong day with a 6-3, 6-3 win over UMKC's Melinda Johnson at No. 1 singles. Hanna then made quick work of the Kangaroos' Marina Albert, winning 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. Andersson earned her second singles victory of the day with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot before Shinde earned her fourth overall victory on Friday with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles. Nebraska's final victory came at the No. 5 spot, where Maddox-Herr defeated Linda Ammar Mouhoub, 6-2, 6-0.

Following its fifth straight win - all at the sparkling new Dillon Tennis Center - Nebraska will enjoy Saturday off from competition before closing the weekend with a Sunday dual against No. 71 Wyoming (3-2). Doubles action with the Cowgirls begins at 11:30 a.m., with singles play to follow. Admission to Sunday's match is free and free live scoring will be available on Huskers.com.
