Lincoln - The Nebraska women’s tennis team powered its way to a 6-1 victory over South Dakota on Friday at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.
Nebraska improved to 10-1 on the season, while the Coyotes slipped to 4-5.
The Huskers made quick work of picking up the doubles point, as the new doubles pair of Mary Hanna and Lisa Andersson blasted to a 6-2 victory over USD's Emma Kranendonk and Ellie Burns at the No. 1 position. Another new pair for the Huskers, Vasanti Shinde and Paula Del Cueto Castillo added a 6-4 win over Milica Pavlovic and Elise van Zijst to secure the point.
Andersson and Matysova took an early lead in their first sets of singles play and powered through second sets to secure a 3-0 lead for the Huskers. Andersson defeated Yuliya Sidenko 6-2, 6-3. Matysova followed with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Kranendonk, as Matysova claimed her second win of the night. The remainder of the matches moved into the third set.
Del Cueto Castillo brought home the winning point for the Big Red by notching a 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 win over van Zijst. Del Cueto Castillo improved to 3-1 in singles play for the Huskers. Also bringing home hard-fought singles victories for the Huskers were Vasanti Shinde and Mackenna Maddox-Herr.
Nebraska returns to home action at the Dillon Tennis Center on Saturday when the Huskers face Drake. Doubles action begins at 11 a.m.
