Lincoln - The Nebraska women’s tennis team outlasted visiting Memphis on Sunday at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center to improve to 9-1 on the season.
In the first meeting ever between the two schools in women's tennis, the Huskers fought hard to notch their second narrow win of the weekend in one of the longest matches of the season.
Katerina Matysova and Mackeena Maddox-Herr notched the first win of the day for the Big Red with their doubles victory at No. 3. They defeated the Tiger tandem of Gabrielle Paul and Tara McElroy, 6-1.
Memphis posted a win at No. 1 doubles as Nebraska's Maggy Lehmicke and Lisa Andersson suffered a 6-4 setback to Hanna Sohn and Janina Berres.
But the Huskers won a hard-fought battle at the No. 2 spot to bring home the crucial doubles point, as Mary Hanna and Vasanti Shinde defeated Kathryn Hughes and Marta Morga, 7-6. Hanna and Shinde improved to a perfect 9-0 on the season.
In singles play, Lehmicke rebounded from a 6-0 first-set loss to storm to a three-set victory with a 6-2 win in the second set and a 6-0 victory in the third over the Tigers' Sohn to get the Huskers and important win at No. 1 singles.
Memphis got wins at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles spots, but Shinde rebounded from a 6-1 setback in her first set to battle to a three-set win at No. 5.
Paula Del Cueto Castillo also rallied from a opening-set loss to fight her way to a three-set win at No. 6 to help secure the match for the Huskers. It was one of five singles matches that went three sets between the Huskers and Tigers on Sunday.
Nebraska returns to home action at the Dillon Tennis Center on Friday, Feb. 28, when the Huskers face South Dakota at 5 p.m.
