Big Red Beat RedHawks

Lincoln – The Nebraska women’s tennis team advanced to 8-1 following a close win over the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks, 4-3, Friday at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.

The Huskers scored four points quick to secure the win, before three dropping singles matches, including a pair in super-tiebreaker sets in the last minutes of play.

Doubles pair Maggy Lehmicke and Lisa Andersson notched a quick 6-2 win over Nelli Ponomareva and Nastia Vasukhina of Miami (Ohio) to put the Huskers one up in doubles competition. Mary Hanna and Vasanti Shinde came in to clinch the doubles point for Nebraska with a 6-4 win over Hannah Shteyn and Anzhelika Shapovalova to remain undefeated.

Hanna, Andersson and Matysova all recorded singles victories on the day to earn the team win for the Huskers. Hanna defeated the RedHawks’ Andreea Badlileanu, 6-4, 6-2 with the support of the home crowd. Andersson earned the win over Ponomareva with a 7-5, 6-0 decision. Katerina Matysova secured the last win for the Huskers over Hannah Shteyn of Miami, 6-1, 6-2.

The Huskers will take on the Memphis Tigers on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. The Tigers (1-5) are led by former Husker assistant coach Hayden Perez. Memphis has faced a tough schedule, losing five straight with setbacks to No. 25 Mississippi, 45th-ranked Purdue, No. 60 California and 74th-ranked Washington State.
