Lincoln – The Nebraska women’s tennis team saw its six-match winning streak snapped Saturday, suffering its first loss of the season to No. 32 Wichita State, 6-1, at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.
Pulling in the lone point for the Huskers was junior Mary Hanna. Hanna battled through two sets and a super tiebreaker at the No. 2 spot to finally claim a 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 victory over Wichita State’s Julia Schiller. Hanna also paired with Vasanti Shinde to claim a 6-3 doubles win over Rebecca Pedrazzi and Alexandra Trifunovic of Wichita State. Despite that win, the Shockers walked away with the team doubles point after Wichita State won tight 6-4 matches at both No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.
Wichita State presented an impressive lineup, including No. 71 ranked Gabriela Porubin, who defeated Maggy Lehmicke, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 1 singles spot. Lisa Andersson (No. 3 singles), Katerina Matysova (No. 4), Shinde (No. 5) and Mackenna Maddox-Herr (No. 5) also fell in straight sets to their talented Shocker opponents.
Despite a disappointing result against a strong Wichita State team, Nebraska is still 5-1 this season, including a 1-1 record against ranked opponents. The Huskers will look to get back in the win column on Sunday, when Nebraska hosts the Colorado State Rams at the Dillon Tennis Center. The match will begin at 11 a.m. and the first 100 fans through the door will receive candy conversation hearts. Admission to the match is free.
