Huskers Fall at No. 8 Maryland

College Park, Md. - Jasmine Cincore scored a career-high nine points and Maddie Simon added nine of her own in her return from injury, but the Nebraska women's basketball team suffered an 89-50 loss to No. 8 Maryland at the Xfinity Center on Thursday night.

Nebraska slipped to 9-5 overall and 0-3 in the Big Ten with the loss, while the Terrapins improved to 13-2 and 2-1 in the conference.

Junior Allie Havers contributed nine points and four rebounds to lead the Husker starting five, as Nebraska struggled to score against a stingy Terp defense. Jessica Shepard finished with six points and eight rebounds and Rachel Theriot managed six of her own, but no other Husker scored more than three points on the night.

Malina Howard led five Terps in double figures with 15 points on 7-of-7 shooting inside, while Brene Mosely added 14 points and four assists. Brionna Jones and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough contributed 11 points apiece, while Tierney Pfirman pitched in 10 points.

As a team, Maryland hit 52.7 percent (39-74) of its shots from the field, including 6-of-14 threes. The Terps outrebounded the Huskers, 50-27, and won the turnover battle, 19-12.

Nebraska hit just 30.2 percent (16-53) of its shots from the floor, including 4-of-10 threes, while going 14-of-16 at the free throw line. The 50 points scored were the most by the Huskers against Maryland in three games as Big Ten foes.

Nebraska fell behind 10-2 in the first five minutes, opening the game just 1-for-9 from the floor while trying to pound the ball inside against Maryland's formidable post defense.

The Huskers rallied to cut the Maryland lead to 14-10 on Shepard's only two points of the first half with 1:56 left in the opening quarter. The Terps responded with a 6-0 run to end the quarter and take a 20-10 lead to the second.

Nebraska hit just 4-of-17 shots in the opening period, while the Terrapins hit 10-of-21 shots from the floor.

The Terps solidified their lead with a 12-2 surge to open the second quarter to take a 32-12 lead with 4:59 left in the half.

Nebraska outscored Maryland 9-7 of the next 3:30 to cut the Terrapin lead to 39-21 after four consecutive points from Simon, who had missed NU's previous six games with a broken arm.

But the Terrapins headed to halftime with a 46-21 lead after seven consecutive points from Walker-Kimbrough. Nebraska closed the half at just 27.6 percent (8-29) from the floor, including 1-for-5 from three-point range and 4-of-4 at the free throw line. NU was outrebounded, 24-16, in the half, while losing the turnover battle, 12-5.

Maryland hit 52.5 percent (21-40) from the field, including 3-of-7 threes. The Terps were 1-of-2 at the free throw line. Howard and Jones led the Terps in the first half, combining for 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting, while adding 13 rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block.

Nebraska returns to Big Ten home action this weekend when the Huskers take on Illinois Sunday. Tip-off between the Big Red and the Fighting Illini is set for 2 p.m., with tickets available now at Huskers.com.
