Huskers Top Falcons, 6-1

Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska women's tennis team topped the Air Force Falcons, 6-1, Sunday at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center. The win moved the Huskers to 3-0 this season and 9-0 all-time against the Falcons.

Doubles action began promptly at 9 a.m. on three of the six indoor courts of the Dillon Tennis Center. Katerina Matysova and Mackenna Maddox-Herr grabbed the first victory of the day when they defeated Lily Forlini and Elisa Nelson of Air Force, 6-2 at the No. 3 doubles spot. No. 1 doubles pair Maggy Lehmicke and Lisa Andersson then pulled off a swift 6-3 victory over the Falcons' Mary Meyers and Elizabeth Barnickel to give Nebraska the doubles point. 

Leading the match 1-0, Nebraska extended its lead to 2-0 at No. 4 singles, where Matysova toppled Lily Forlini 6-2, 6-1. Fellow Husker Vasanti Shinde then defeated the Falcons' Jocelle Rudico 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 5 spot to push the margin to 3-0.

Mary Hanna fell to Air Force's Chloe Forlini 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 2 singles spot. Hanna's first loss of the season proved to be the only point the Falcons would win, as Air Force trimmed the Huskers' lead to 3-1.

Lehmicke pulled out a hard fought 6-1, 6-4 victory over Meyers at the No. 1 singles spot to secure Nebraska's third win of the season, before Andersson and Sydney Harlow closed out the match with two more victories. Both Huskers battled through tie breaker points to win one of their sets. Harlow defeated Elisa Nelson of Air Force 7-6, 6-3 at No. 6 singles. Andersson closed out the morning with a 6-2, 7-6 win against Barnickle at No. 3 singles to secure the 6-1 victory for the Huskers.

Nebraska continues its season-opening homestand on Friday at 3 p.m. when the Huskers take on in-state rival Creighton at the Dillon Tennis Center. Admission is free and live scoring will be available on Huskers.com
