Huskers Complete Their Stay In Honolulu

Honolulu, Hawaii - The Nebraska men's tennis team completed its third and final day competing in the Rainbow Warrior Inviational hosted by the University of Hawaii on Thursday. Singles play was the only competition for the day, and the Huskers finished with a record of 2-6 following two straight days of winning play.

Senior Dusty Boyer had an impresive match against No. 77 Marco Nunez of Florida State in a tough battle that resulted in Boyer's favor. Boyer won the first set, 6-4, and took an incredibly competitive second set, 7-6. Marc Herrmann also earned a win against Hawaii's Kai Wehnelt, winning 6-1, 6-4 in straight sets. Herrmann and Boyer held the two victories for Nebraska in Thursday's play.

Toby Boyer fell to Michael Rinaldi of Florida State despite winning the first set. After falling 6-2 in set one, Rinaldi rallied for a close 7-5 victory in the second set before winning the third set, 7-5. Andrew Dzulysnky dropped a tight match against Felix Albert of Hawaii. Dzulynsky took the win in the first set, 4-6, but lost the final two sets by identical 7-6 margins.

Bradford Zitsch also saw his match against Hawaii's Nikolai Storch go three sets. Like Boyer and Dzulynsky, Zitsch won the opening set, 7-5), before Storch stormed back with a 6-2 win followed by a 6-3 finish in the third. Scott Elsass played a tough match against Joakim Pinola of Hawaii, falling 7-5 and 6-4. Chris Schindler rounded out the day with a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Jack Haffey of Florida State.

"Much tougher today as the team only went 2-6 in singles and three of those matches were tough losses of three sets that didn't go our way," said Head Coach Kerry McDermott. "Dusty beat a kid ranked 77th from Florida State in two straight sets and seemed to play better as the tournament went on from day to day. Marc Herrmann also played very well today and took down a very solid player from Hawaii to finish strong."

"As a team today, if we win a few of those three-setters then it would have been a good day but we had a very good fight, and I feel like this team will only get better as the year goes on. We have some areas to improve upon such as return of serves and also attacking on short balls but not trying to go for the lines and trying to hit too big of a shot. We have a few weeks now to get ready for some indoor tennis and our anxious to play our first match ever on our new indoor courts."
