Honolulu, Hawaii - The Nebraska men's tennis team kicked off the Rainbow Warrior Inviational held by the University of Hawaii. Due to a rain delay, competition was postponed to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
On the first day of competition, Nebraska kicked off the tournament with the match-up of Dusty Boyer against Hawaii's Kai Wehnelt, where Boyer came out on top 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
The competitive Marc Herrmann took on opponent Terrell Whitehurst of Florida State where he was defeated in the first set 6-0 followed by a 7-5 finish where Herrmann was able to take hold of a few games in the set.
In another singles match, Andrew Dzulynsky competed against Florida State's Dugass, who posted a 6-0, 6-4 win over Dzulynsky.
Freshman Toby Boyer saw singles action where he cometed against Igor Kolaric, with Boyer finishing on top with a win. Boyer was able to take the match in a swift 6-4, 6-2 victory.
Senior Bradford Zitsch also competed against Hawaii's Ruben Blattner, and Zitsch was able to pull out a win. The match was very tight with Zitsch winning the first set in a close 7-6, followed by a loss of 5-7 in the second. Zitsch came back in the third set to take claim the victory with a 6-2 win.
Scott Elsass competed against Eric Kenneth of Hawaii. Elsass started strong and finished with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Kenneth.
Chris Schindler took the lead over Hawaii's Kula Companion, taking the first set 6-4. Schindler finished off the win with a 6-3 victory in the second set.
The second round of singles competition will resume on Wednesday, Jan. 7.
In the first round of doubles competition, partners Scott Elsass and Marc Herrmann defeated Florida State's Jake Albo and Jose Gracia by an 8-5 margin.
Brother duo Dusty and Toby Boyer played Florida State's brother tandem of Terrance and Terrell Whitehurst. The Boyer brothers took the upper hand over the Whitehurst siblings, 8-4.
Andrew Dzulynsky and Bradford Zitsch added another win with an 8-5 victory over Felix Albert and Kai Wehnelt of Hawaii.
Finishing up the first round, Chris Schindler and Tomi Antolijak, who defeated Hawaii's Joakim Pinola and Spencer Travalino 8-5.
In the second round of doubles competition, Elsass and Herrmann quickly defeated Hawaii's Jaokim Pinola and Spencer Travalino in a 8-1 mark.
The Boyer brothers grabbed a victory over Hawaii's Marcel Chan and Nikolai Storch, 8-4.
Florida State's Michael Rinaldi and Dugass of Florida State took the upper hand over Dzulynksy and Zitsch, 8-4.
Wrapping up the doubles competition for the day, Schindler and Antolijak fell to Florida State's Whitehurst brothers, 8-4.
"It was a good first day of competition to start the year, as we went 6-2 overall in doubles and 5-3 in sinlges against Florida State and Hawaii," said Head Coach Kerry McDermott. "Toby and Dusty Boyer had a great doubles win, knocking off the No. 55 team in the country from Florida State by the score of 8-4. Overall a good performance, and I am looking forward to getting back at it tomorrow."
The Rainbow Warrior Invitational will resume on Wednesday, Jan. 7 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Resultes can be found here on Huskers.com.
