Trio of Huskers Earn Olympic Trial Cuts

Federal Way, Wash.- Eight Husker swimmers competed on day one of the 2015 AT&T Winter National Championships at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash. Katt Sickle, Taryn Collura and Erin Oeltjen each earned Olympic trial cuts for their swims on Thursday.

Sickle kicked off the morning session for Nebraska swimming in the 400-meter freestyle. Sickle raced to a time of 4:16.43 earning her an Olympic trials cut and the top-spot in heat two of the 400-meter freestyle.  Sickle’s performance earned her a spot in Thursday night’s bonus finals. In the bonus final, Sickle swam a time of 4:19.34 earning her 23rd-place overall.

Collura was outstanding as well for Nebraska. Collura earned an Olympic trials cut after swimming a time of 25.89 in the 50-meter freestyle securing a first-place finish in heat six. Collura’s time was fast enough to earn her a spot in Thursday night’s consolation final. In the consolation final, Collura raced to a time of 26.02 notching a 15th-place finish overall.

Samantha Hardewig also competed for Nebraska on Thursday. Hardewig’s time of 2:24.35 was just shy of a career-best in the 200-meter individual medley. Hardewig also posted a time of 1:16.18 in the 100-meter breaststroke time trials.

The Huskers had several swimmers compete in time trials Thursday afternoon. Oeltjen led the way for Nebraska earning an Olympic trials cut after swimming a time of 1:03.05 in the 100-meter backstroke. Jacqueline Juffer (1:04.85) and Morgan McCafferty (1:04.46) also competed in the 100-meter backstroke. Jordan Ehly (2:36.08) and Julia Roller (2:17.71) swam career-bests in the 200-meter breaststroke and 200-meter butterfly, respectively.

Nebraska’s swimmers will be back in action Friday morning at 11 a.m. for day two of the 2015 AT&T Winter National Championships. Nebraska’s divers will also begin competition at 1 p.m. in Iowa City, Iowa, at the Hawkeye Invitational.
