Lawrence, Kan. - The Nebraska cross country teams took part in the Kansas Rim Rock Collegiate Classic on Saturday morning at Rim Rock Farm.
The Husker men finished third in the University Division 8K race with 71 points, behind No. 22 Iowa State (35) and Kansas (47). The NU women were fourth in the University Division 6K with 105 points. Kansas (23) was the team champion, followed by Rice (50) and Grand Canyon (104).
Peter Spinks paced the Husker men for the second time in three meets this season. He ran a time of 24:22.6 to come in eighth overall. Jacob Olson placed 11th with a time of 24:34.6. Matt Gilbert posted a time of 24:46.7 to finish 18th, while Alec Sery (24:51.5) was 20th and Patrick Letz (24:53.0) was 22nd to finish in the Huskers' top five.
The Huskers' performance was especially strong considering Wyatt McGuire and Nolan Border, two of NU's top-five runners, had to miss Saturday's meet. McGuire won the Big Ten Athlete of the Week award in his last race.
"The men had a terrific pack between the top five, separated by only 31 seconds," Head Coach David Harris said. "Some posted their best times ever. Despite having two of our top-five guys out, we competed very well against a nationally ranked Iowa State team and regionally ranked Kansas team. To get third here was good. It's a step up in competition for us every single meet."
Bonnie Smith led the Husker women for the third straight meet with a 17th-place finish in 22:08.1. Katrina Santiago finished 25th overall with a time of 22:27.5. Running right behind her was Megan Lush, who took 26th in 22:28.4. Haley Harsin was 34th with a time of 22:52.4, and freshman Nicole Colonna rounded out the Huskers' top five, running a time of 23:01.0 to place 38th overall.
"The women ran better as a team this week," Harris said. "You could see our athletes were out there looking around and seeing their teammates and focusing on that. I'm disappointed we got beat by Grand Canyon by one point, but we did well overall."
The Huskers have one more regular-season meet before the Big Ten Championships. Nebraska takes next weekend off before heading to the Bradley Classic on Oct. 16. The Big Ten meet is set for Nov. 1 in Evanston, Ill.
