East Lansing, Mich. - The Nebraska men's and women's track and field teams each finished second at the Big Ten Track and Field Outdoor Championships on Sunday at Michigan State's Ralph Young Field.
The Husker men scored 108 points, which was not enough to keep pace with team champion Illinois, who won with 145 points. The women's team totaled 97 points, but Michigan State won the team title with 128 points. The Husker women have been runners-up at two straight Big Ten outdoor meets and three of four since joining the conference. The men have placed in the top three at every Big Ten outdoor meet.
The Huskers earned three silver medals on the final day of competition. Mollie Gribbin earned runner-up honors in the triple jump with a career-best day. Gribbin surpassed her PR twice on the day with her best effort at 43-3 3/4 (13.20m). Shawnice Williams was the runner-up in the 800 meters, running 2:05.71. Steven Cahoy was the pole vault runner-up, clearing 17-5 (5.31m) on his first attempt. Marusa Cernjul took second in the high jump, reaching 5-11 1/2 (1.82m). Reka Czuth, who won yesterday's long jump title, was third for the Huskers, clearing 5-10 1/2 (1.79m).
Jake Bender earned a podium spot, finishing third in the 400 meters in 46.76. Levi Gipson was fifth at 47.27.
Freshman Antoine Lloyd, running in his home state, placed fourth in all three individual events he raced in on Sunday. Lloyd ran PRs of 13.69 in the 110-meter hurdles and 10.38 in the 100 meters - an event in which he entered the meet ranked 20th in the Big Ten. He also ran 21.11 in the 200 meters, while Ricco Hall was fifth at 21.14. Lloyd was the top freshman runner in all three events.
Sean Pille ran fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in 51.99, while Drew Wiseman was sixth at 52.84. In the women's 100-meter hurdles, Jordan Stiens finished sixth in 13.71. In the men's 110-meter hurdles, Pille was sixth (13.74) and Oladapo Akinmoladun was eighth (13.91).
Ellie Ewere took fourth in the triple jump (42-0 3/4, 12.82m) and freshman Angela Mercurio was eighth (41-3, 12.57m).
Will Lohman was fifth in the shot put, recording a 61-2 1/4 (18.65m) throw. Carlie Pinkelman was also fifth in the shot put, throwing 52-4 (15.95m). Tristen Sharp was eighth (50-8 1/4, 15.45m). Christian Sanderfer and Beau Simmons were sixth and eighth, respectively, in the pole vault to add team points for the Husker men. Both cleared 16-9 1/4 (5.11m).
The Nebraska men took third in the 4x100 relay, running a season-best 40.17. The Husker women finished seventh with a time of 46.54. In the 4x400 relay, the men's team finished eighth in 3:11.28, despite a collision that caused Levi Gipson to trip over a runner at the exchange.
The Big Ten Network will air tape-delayed coverage of the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships at 10 a.m. (CT) on Sunday, May 24.
The athletes who qualify for the NCAA West Regional will compete in Austin, Texas from May 28-30.
