The Nebraska women’s gymnastics team’s Amanda and Jennifer Lauer were named Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship recipients on Thursday.
The Big Ten awards $15,000 to each of the 14 institutions for student-athletes who plan to continue their education at a graduate degree program and is based primarily on academic achievement. For the 2014-15 year, 29 student-athletes across the conference were awarded the honor.
Amanda Lauer, a three-time NACGC/W Scholastic All-American and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, is a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll honoree. In the gym Lauer proved to be instrumental as a junior, securing a spot in the leadoff position in the beam lineups. She was a member of the historic beam squad that helped Nebraska clinch a spot into the Super Six team finals at the 2014 NCAA Championships.
Jennifer Lauer, also a three-time NACGC/W Scholastic All-American and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, finished her Husker career as one of the program’s most decorated beam workers. As a senior in the 2014-15 season, Lauer posted scores of 9.90 or higher on four different occasions, earning Big Ten event specialist of the week honors after winning the event on the road against Minnesota on Feb. 16. The 2013 Big Ten beam co-champion was also a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll honoree.
Both Lauer girls were recently named to Nebraska’s inaugural class of Outstanding Scholars, which honors senior student-athletes who maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.9 or better. The pair will attend the University of Nebraska Medical Center for physical therapy in the fall.
This year’s recipients span 15 different sports and will continue their education in a variety of different disciplines, including athletic administration and sport management, audiology, biomedical engineering, business administration, chemistry, communicative sciences and disorders, dentistry, international affairs, law, medicine, occupational therapy and physical therapy.
