Columbus, Ohio - The Nebraska softball team scored early and often Saturday, defeating Iowa 9-6 to clinch a spot in the Big Ten Tournament championship game. The Huskers will face No. 3 Michigan for the title at 8:20 p.m. (Central).
The Huskers used the long ball to grab a 4-0 lead just four batters into the game. Junior Kiki Stokes and sophomore MJ Knighten began the game with back-to-back home runs before junior Alicia Armstrong reached on an infield single. Senior Steph Pasquale then launched a two-run homer to left center to make it 4-0 and cap a string of three home runs in the span of four batters.
Iowa answered back with three runs in the bottom of the first. Holly Hoffman drove in the first run one with a one-out, RBI single. With the bases load, Allie Wood drew a walk to force in another run before an RBI ground out cut the lead to 4-3. The Hawkeyes had the bases loaded with two outs before a nice diving play by freshman second baseman Laura Barrow ended the inning.
Nebraska added another run in the top of the second. Armstrong doubled with two outs and scored on an RBI single from Pasquale to push the lead to 5-3.
The Huskers stretched their lead to 8-3 with three more runs in the top of the third. Sophomore Cassie McClure singled to begin the frame and sophomore pinch runner Lotte Sjulin advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior Mattie Fowler. Freshman Kayla Jablonski and Barrow then drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Stokes grounded out to first, but on the play Sjulin was able to race home just ahead of the tag to give Nebraska a 6-3 lead. Knighten then delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single up the middle to make it 8-3.
Nebraska used another two-out run to push the lead to 9-3 in the top of the fourth. Muir and McClure drew consecutive walks to begin the inning. Following two quick outs, Barrow ripped a 3-1 pitch to the gap in left center for an RBI double that scored Muir.
After Nebraska scored five straight runs, Iowa used a three-run fifth to pull within 9-6. Kaitlyn Mullarkey drove in a run with an RBI single before Allie Wood lined a two-run double just fair down the right-field line. The Hawkeyes had a runner at second with no outs, but McClure came on in relief and retired three of the next four hitters to prevent any further damage.
McClure then shut the door on the Hawkeyes in the sixth and seventh, as the Huskers won on a double play. McClure earned her fifth save by tossing 3.0 innings of scoreless, no-hit relief. Junior right-hander Emily Lockman (18-12) earned the win, allowing six runs in 4.0 innings.
Offensively, Knighten, Armstrong and Pasquale each produced two hits, with Knighten and Pasquale driving in three runs apiece.
Nebraska improved to 34-20 with the win, while Iowa ended its season with a 19-40 record.
