Madison, Wis. - The Nebraska softball team polished off a three-game sweep of the Wisconsin Badgers with a 9-0 five-inning victory in the series finale Sunday at Goodman Diamond.
In the circle, freshman right-hander Kaylan Jablonski and junior right-hander Emily Lockman combined on a two-hit shutout, Nebraska's third shutout in Big Ten play. Jablonski (6-5) earned the win with 4.0 shutout innings, while Lockman pitched a perfect fifth inning.
The five-inning victory was Nebraska's 15th run-rule win of the season, as the Huskers improved to 29-19 on the year and remained in third place in the Big Ten standings with a 15-5 record in league play.
Offensively, Jablonski tied her career highs with two hits and two RBIs, while her battery mate - senior catcher Steph Pasquale - homered and drove in three while walking twice in a 1-for-2 effort. Sophomore Cassie McClure also had two hits, while junior Alicia Armstrong had two RBIs. Nebraska out-hit Wisconsin, 11-2.
Nebraska jumped out to a 4-0 lead four batters into the game. Junior Kiki Stokes was hit by a pitch to begin the game before sophomore MJ Knighten lined a sharp single to center. Armstrong then drove in the game's first run with an RBI single up the middle. Leading 1-0, Pasquale crushed the next pitch over the fence in right center for a three-run homer that capped the Huskers' four-run first.
Wisconsin had runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the first before the Huskers recorded the second out on a failed squeeze bunt attempt. Jablonski then escaped the inning without any damage following a lineout to Knighten at third.
The Huskers then scored three times in the top of the third to extend their lead to 7-0. Pasquale got the rally started with a one-out walk before consecutive singles from McClure and junior Dawna Tyson loaded the bases. Jablonski then helped herself with a two-run single that scored Pasquale and freshman pinch runner Gina Metzler to give NU a 6-0 lead. Senior Kylee Muir then capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Tyson.
Nebraska added another run in the top of the fourth. Stokes led off with a single, stole second and scored on a two-out, RBI single from McClure.
The Huskers plated their ninth run in the top of the fifth. Muir reach on an error, freshman Laura Barrow singled and Stokes was hit by her second pitch of the day to load the bases with one out. Following a pop out, Armstrong lined the first pitch she saw into left field for an RBI single.
Lockman then entered the game in the seventh and retired all three batters to wrap up the win. Wisconsin fell to 19-28 overall and 3-14 in league play with the loss. Taylor-Paige Stewart (8-16) took the loss for the Badgers, allowing nine runs (eight earned) in a complete-game effort.
Nebraska returns home and kicks off the final week of the regular season on Tuesday with a makeup game against Drake at 7 p.m.
