| Nebraska moved a season-high nine games above .500...the Huskers won their first one-run game of the season, improving to 1-5 in one-run games...Kiki Stokes walked to extend her streak to 20 consecutive games reaching base safely. |
Madison, Wis. - The Nebraska softball team rallied from a two-run deficit to earn a 3-2 victory in game two and complete a doubleheader sweep of Wisconsin on Saturday at Goodman Diamond.
All three of Nebraska's runs scored without a hit, as the Huskers plated runs on a bases-loaded walk, a sacrifice fly and an RBI ground out. The Huskers trailed 2-0 after three innings of play before scoring single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth.
The ability to scratch across three runs made a winner of freshman right-hander Kaylan Jablonsi (5-5), who improved to 4-1 in Big Ten play. Jablonski allowed two runs in 6.0 innings. Junior right-hander Emily Lockman pitched a perfect seventh inning to notch her first save of the season.
Offensively, junior Dawna Tyson and sophomores MJ Knighten and Cassie McClure drove in Nebraska's three runs, while the Huskers were out-hit 7-6. Nebraska improved to 28-19 with the win and moved to 14-5 in league play.
Mariah Watts threw a great game for Wisconsin, but fell to 8-8 on the season, allowing only two earned runs in a complete-game effort. The Badgers dropped to 19-27 on the season and 3-13 in conference action.
Wisconsin took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third. The Badgers loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the third before Jablonski retired the next two hitters. One out away from escaping the jam, Marissa Mersch hit a soft liner to left field that dropped in for a two-out, two-run single.
Nebraska then had the same situation in the top of the fourth but managed only one run. Senior Steph Pasquale walked, McClure singled and senior Kylee Muir singled to load the bases with no outs. Tyson then drew a walk to score Pasquale. Trailing 2-1, the Huskers still had the bases loaded with no outs but a line out, a pop out and a ground out prevented further runs.
The Huskers loaded the bases with no outs again in the fifth and once again had to settle for one run. Knighten singled before junior Alicia Armstrong walked. A Wisconsin error then loaded the bases before McClure tied the game at 2-2 with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Knighten. Nebraska then had runners at second and third with two outs before a fly out kept the game tied.
Wisconsin nearly grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fifth. With a runner on second and two outs, Chloe Miller hit a hard ground ball to the left side of the infield. Armstrong went to her knees to make a nice backhanded stop, then threw from her knees to get Miller and retire the side.
Nebraska then loaded the bases with no outs for the third straight inning in the top of the sixth, settling for one run to take a 3-2 lead. Jablonski began the inning with a bloop single to right before freshman Laura Barrow put down a sacrifice bunt and wound up safe at first on an error. Junior Kiki Stokes then walked to load the bases before Knighten scored Jablonski with an RBI ground out. With runners at first and third and one out, the Huskers were unable to add to their lead following a ground out and fly out.
Jablonski stranded runners at second and third in the bottom of the sixth, before Lockman slammed the door in the seventh, coaxing a pair of ground outs and a strikeout.
Nebraska and Wisconsin wrap up their three-game series on Sunday at Noon. The game will be televised live on the Big Ten Network.
