Madison, Wis. - A patient Husker offense plated 12 runs over the third and fourth innings to power the Nebraska softball team to a 13-5, five-inning victory over Wisconsin in the first of two games Saturday in Madison, Wis.
Nebraska drew nine walks in the game and was hit by two pitches. Six of those free passes came with the bases loaded, forcing in six of the Huskers' 13 runs.
With the win, Nebraska improved to 27-19 on the season, moving eight games above .500 for the first time. The Huskers also held on to third place in the Big Ten Conference standings with a 13-5 league record.
Sophomore right-hander Cassie McClure (9-2) earned the win in relief, allowing only one earned run in 3.0 innings. Junior right-hander Emily Lockman got the start and was charged with four runs (three earned) in 3.0 innings of work.
Offensively, sophomore MJ Knighten finished 3-for-3 with a walk and four RBIs. Senior Steph Pasquale added two RBIs of her own, as all nine Husker starters produced an RBI and 10 Huskers scored a run.
The Huskers jumped out to a 1-0 lead two batters into the game. Junior Kiki Stokes began the game with a triple and scored on an RBI single from Knighten.
Wisconsin stranded runners at first and second in the bottom of the first before plating three two-out runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead. The Badgers had a runner on second with two outs before back-to-back walks loaded the bases. Marissa Mersch then lined a two-run single to center before a Husker error on the next batter allowed a third run to score.
The Huskers stormed back with their eight-run third inning, sending 13 batters to the plate. Knighten began the frame with a single, before junior Alicia Armstrong walked and a Wisconsin error loaded the bases. McClure and senior Kylee Muir then drew back-to-back bases-loaded walks to tie the game at 3-3. Junior Dawna Tyson delivered an RBI single through the right side that gave Nebraska a 4-3 lead. Sophomore Kat Woolman followed with yet another bases-loaded walk before freshman Laura Barrow reached on an RBI fielder's choice that gave Nebraska a 6-3 lead.
After recording the first out, Wisconsin quickly picked up its second out. But Knighten's second hit of the inning drove in Barrow and freshman pinch runner Gina Metzler. Armstrong then walked for her third time in the game and Pasquale capped the inning with an RBI single up the middle that stretched the lead to 9-3.
Nebraska added four more runs in the fourth to take a 13-3 lead. Tyson walked with one out before Woolman reached on an error and Barrow singled to load the bases. Stokes was then hit by a pitch to score Tyson, before Knighten walked to score Woolman. Armstrong was then hit by a pitch to plate Barrow before Pasquale capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to center.
Wisconsin got a run back to cut the lead to 13-4 when Chloe Miller produced a two-out, RBI double when Stokes was unable to make a running catch after covering considerable ground.
The Badgers then got an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth and threatened to extend the game before McClure wrapped up the victory with a strikeout.
Taylor-Paige Stewart (8-15) took the loss for Wisconsin, which fell to 19-26 on the season and 3-12 in Big Ten play.
Nebraska and Wisconsin wrap up their Saturday doubleheader with game two.
