Nebraska lost its second straight Big Ten road game, falling to 4-2 on the road in conference play...MJ Knighten singled in the top of the third to extend her hitting streak to 19 games....Kiki Stokes finished 3-for-3 to produce her 10th three-hit game of the year...Emily Lockman tied her season high in strikeouts (5) and allowed her second-fewest runs of the season in a start. |
West Lafayette, Ind. - In a classic pitcher's duel, it was Purdue who delivered the timely hit in a 1-0 victory over the Nebraska softball team on Friday at Boilermaker Stadium.
The Huskers, who hit into tough luck throughout the game, had the bases loaded with one out in both the third and sixth innings but failed to score. Nebraska was 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position on the game, and the Huskers stranded eight runners. Purdue was just 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position, but that one hit was a two-out, RBI single from Ashley Burkhardt that plated the game's only run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Burkhardt's clutch hit spoiled a terrific outing from junior right-hander Emily Lockman. Lockman (11-11) allowed only one run in a complete-game effort, tying her season high with five strikeouts.
Offensively, junior Kiki Stokes was 3-for-4 to produce Nebraska's lone multi-hit game, while sophomore MJ Knighten was 1-for-3 to extend her hitting streak to 19 games. Each team had six hits in the game.
Neither team mounted much offense through the first two innings. Then in the top of the third, freshman Laura Barrow walked and Stokes and Knighten recorded back-to-back singles to load the bases. The Huskers then hit into tough luck, as junior Alicia Armstrong lined out to the shortstop before senior Steph Pasquale lined out to the second baseman in the two of the hardest-hit balls of the game.
Nebraska loaded the bases again in the top of the fifth but once again came up empty. Barrow reached on a walk before Stokes singled and Knighten walked. Armstrong then hit the ball hard with the bases loaded for the second straight at bat, this time hitting a sharp one-hopper to Paris Andrew at short, who threw home for a force out. Lilly Fecho (16-10) then fell behind Pasquale 3-1 before bouncing back with two clutch pitches for an inning-ending strikeout.
In the bottom of the fifth, a leadoff walk, a sacrifice bunt and a two-out walk gave Purdue runners at second and third. Burkhardt, the Boilermakers' top hitter, then grounded a 2-0 pitch up the middle for an RBI single.
Burkhardt's single helped Purdue improve to 25-14 on the year, including 5-5 in Big Ten play. Nebraska fell to 20-18 on the season and dropped to 8-4 in conferencea ction.
Nebraska and Purdue continue their series on Saturday at Noon (Central).
