Huskers Record Season Best Score on Senior Night

The No. 11 Nebraska men’s gymnastics team (4-12, 0-7 Big Ten) soared to a season best team score of 426.050 at home despite a fourth place finish behind No. 6 Minnesota, No. 2 Penn State and No. 8 Iowa.

The Huskers were boosted by a collection of career highs across multiple classes. All-American Sam Chamberlain notched a huge career best 15.50 on parallel bars to take home the title. Gollott earned a personal best 15.05 on vault to take second, while Stephenson tallied a career high 15.15 on floor for second place as well. Stephenson also tied his career high parallel bars with a score of 14.50, while senior Louis Klein earned a personal best 14.75 on vault to close out his career at the Devaney Center.

Nebraska began the afternoon on parallel bars where the team pieced together a series of great routines to earn a season high 71.350. Leading the way for the Big Red was junior Chamberlain, who shattered his previous career high to grab a personal best 15.50 on the event. Stephenson followed up with a career high-tying 14.50, while Magsam added a career best 13.90. Gollott and King rounded out the rotation with a 13.85 and 13.60 respectively to help the Huskers’ to its season best score. After the first rotation, the Huskers sat in third behind first-place Minnesota (73.200) and Iowa (73.050). Penn State trailed in fourth with a (68.700).

NU next rotated to high bar and garnered a 69.150 paced by Klein’s impressive 14.90 mark. Epperson put together a clean routine to add a 13.95, followed by Gollott’s 13.80 score. Tokar pushed through some bumps to tally a 13.40 for his effort. Stephenson recorded a fall, but finished strong complete with a stuck dismount to snatch a 13.10. The Huskers dropped back to fourth with a 140.500 behind Minnesota (147.250), Iowa (143.450) and Penn State (141.650).

Nebraska traveled to floor for the third rotation and achieved a strong 74.000 event score. Stephenson led the way with his career high 15.15 mark, while Gollott was close behind with a season high 15.00. Freshman Kyle King followed with a solid 14.80, as senior Andrew House and sophomore Coleman Tokar chipped in a 14.55 and 14.50 respectively to bring the steady rotation to a close. After three rotations, NU rallied to third with a 214.500 behind Minnesota (218.850) and Penn State (214.900). Iowa trailed in fourth with a 213.950.

The Huskers started on pommel horse to begin the second half of the meet where junior Ethan Lottman paved the way with his 14.45 score. House concluded his time at the Devaney Center by putting up a solid 14.20 for his pommel routine. King put up a 13.45 as Irick delivered a 13.55 for his performance. Gollott balanced his way to a 13.000 to help NU to a 68.650 team score. The Huskers dropped back down to fourth after four rotations with a 283.150. Minnesota remained in first (289.950) with Iowa in second (287.500) and Penn State in third (286.900).

Nebraska moved to rings in the fifth rotation, delivering a 69.750 event score with help from Epperson’s season high 14.70. Magsam stuck his way to a 14.35 followed by a respectable 13.95 from Irick. Chamberlain made his way into the rings lineup for the first time this season and grabbed a 13.50 for his effort. Redshirt freshman Brenon Sommers, who suffered a grip malfunction in his first attempt, redid his routine and earned a 13.25. The Huskers continued to trail in fourth after five rotations with a 353.900 score. Minnesota maintained the lead (363.650) with Penn State in second (358.450) and Iowa in third (355.950).

In the final rotation of the afternoon, NU finished on vault where the team endured some uncharacteristic landings to achieve a 73.150. Gollott and King led the way for the Big Red, posting a duo of matching 15.05 scores to tie for second on the event. Klein concluded his Husker home career with a career best 14.75, while Chamberlain put down his hands to earn a 14.45. Ungar experienced some trouble on his vault and sat it down, recording a 13.85 for his effort. The Huskers finished the meet with a season best 426.050 in front of the home crowd.

In the team standings, the Huskers could not overcome the other three teams’ top scores. Minnesota took first with a 434.000, followed by Penn State in second (432.100) and Iowa in third (429.250).

Chamberlain took home Nebraska’s sole event title of the evening on parallel bars for his remarkable career high score. Penn State’s Dominic DiFulvio snatched the floor title (15.40), while teammate Alexis Torres took title on rings (15.90) and high bar (15.20) en route to the all-around crown (89.500). Minnesota’s Ellis Mannon took the pommel horse crown with a huge 15.80, while teammate Yaroslav Pochinka shared the vault title with Iowa’s Andrew Botto with a 15.10.

The Huskers will have a week off before entering into post-season competition, beginning first with the Big Ten Championships March 27-28 in College Park, Pa. The two-day event will begin with the team finals and event qualifier competition on Friday, March 27 at 6 p.m. CT. Event finals are scheduled to begin the following day at 4 p.m. Both meets will be televised live on the Big Ten Network.
