Fairbanks, Alaska – Denise Martin fired a career-best smallbore score of 587 against No. 2 Kentucky on Saturday, but despite a valiant effort, the Huskers fell to the Wildcats by a score of 4,669-4,676.
Fifth-ranked Nebraska led Kentucky after smallbore, outscoring the Wildcats 2,316-2,307. Martin, along with Maggie Mical, who tallied a 578 and Rachel Martin (577) finished with high smallbore scores for the Huskers. Lauren Phillips and Kelsey Hansen followed closely behind – Phillips with a 574 and Hansen with a 571.
For Kentucky, Connor Davis finished with a smallbore score of 585, while Sonya May ended with a 579.
In air rifle, Nebraska’s Lauren Phillips and Rachel Martin both had high scores – Martin with a 590 and Phillips with a 591. Jaycee Carter and Hansen both fired a 586, while D. Martin and Mical finished with 585. The Huskers’ final air rifle score was 2,353.
Four Wildcats – Connor Davis, Elijah Ellis, Heather Kirby and Jonathan Pinkel – ended the day with scores of 594 in air rifle to help the team come from behind in the second discipline to beat the Huskers. Kentucky finished with a team air rifle score of 2,369.
The Huskers are back in action on Sunday as the team competes in its final match of the year. Nebraska will face off against No. 7 Alaska-Fairbanks at 9 am.
