Huskers Top Creighton to Close Fall Season

The Nebraska softball team completed its fall exhibition schedule with a 7-5 victory over Creighton in Omaha on Sunday afternoon.

The Huskers started fast, scoring twice in the top of the first inning on a two-run homer from senior Kylee Muir. Nebraska added to its lead on a sacrifice fly from sophomore MJ Knighten in the top of the third.

Creighton scored twice in the bottom of the third to trim Nebraska's lead to 3-2, but the Huskers would answer. The first seven Huskers reached in the top of the fourth, as NU built its lead to 7-2. Freshman Laura Barrow scored the first run of the inning on a squeeze bunt from sophomore Rachel Arthur. Junior Kiki Stokes and freshman Gina Metzler singled to score two more runs, before Knighten capped the four-run inning with an RBI single.

The Bluejays added a run in the bottom of the sixth, then tacked on a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh for the final 7-5 margin.

Junior right-hander Emily Lockman earned the complete-game victory for Nebraska, while Knighten and Muir each drove in a pair of runs at the plate.

With its fall schedule complete, Nebraska will turn its attention to the 2015 season. The Huskers will return to practice in January and open the season at the Hotel Encanto Invitational, Feb. 6-8, in Las Cruces, N.M.

Nebraska will be looking to repeat as Big Ten Conference champions in 2015, after sharing the regular-season title with Michigan in 2014. NU will also seek to win an NCAA Regional title for the third consecutive season this spring.
