Huskers Rally Past Rams, 10-9

Lincoln - A wild final play lifted the Nebraska softball team to a 10-9 come-from-behind victory over Colorado State in the Huskers' first of two games Sunday at Bowlin Stadium.

The Huskers trailed 9-8 and were down to their final out in the bottom of the seventh inning. With freshman Laura Barrow on first base, junior Kiki Stokes hit a fly ball to shallow center field. The ball just eluded a pair of diving outfielders for a double. On the play, Barrow raced home from third and beat a wild throw for the game-tying run. The throw was wild enough that the speedy Stokes raced all the way around to score and give Nebraska the 10-9 victory.

Nebraska, which has scored 32 runs in its first three games at the Husker Fall Classic, produced 13 hits in the victory. Stokes was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs. Senior Kylee Muir finished 3-for-4, while senior Steph Pasquale, junior Dawna Tyson and sophomore Kat Woolman each produced two hits. Tyson also added a pair of RBIs.

Junior right-hander Emily Lockman earned the exhibition victory, tossing 2.0 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief. Freshman Kaylan Jablonski earned the start for Nebraska, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits in 5.0 innings. Jablonski struck out four, but walked nine.

Colorado State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. A one-out single and a walk put runners on first and second before a ground ball back to the circle. Jablonski initially bobbled the ball and then looked to throw to third, but ended up having no play anywhere as the Rams loaded the bases. A walk then forced in the game's first run before Jablonski recorded a clutch strikeout. An error allowed a second run to score before a ground out ended the inning.

In the bottom of the frame, Nebraska responded with a six-run inning. Stokes worked a leadoff walk before freshman Gina Metzler reached on an infield single. Stokes took third on the single and Metzler moved up to second on a ground out. With runners at second and third, Muir lined an RBI single to left that scored Stokes. Pasquale followed with an RBI infield single that brought Metzler home and tied the game at 2-2. With runners at first and third and one out, Tyson lined an RBI single past the third baseman to give the Huskers a 3-2 lead. NU stretched the lead to 4-2 on an RBI infield single from Woolman, with sophomore pinch runner Rachel Arthur alertly scoring from second on the play.

Barrow kept the inning alive with a two-out walk that loaded the bases before Stokes delivered a two-run single up the middle to give Nebraska a 6-2 lead.

Colorado State answered back in the top of the second. Back-to-back one-out walks were followed by a bloop RBI double down the left field line that trimmed Nebraska's lead to 6-3. The Rams had runners at second and third with one out and plated another run with a sacrifice fly.

CSU tied the game at 6-6 with another two-run inning in the top of the third. A pair of leadoff walks came around to score on one-out and two-out RBI singles.

Nebraska regained the lead with a two-out rally in the bottom of the third. Barrow worked a two-out walk and scored on a bloop double from Stokes.

The Huskers added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth, when a Muir double and a Tyson two-out RBI single stretched the lead to 8-6.

Colorado State grabbed its first lead at 9-8 on Kristyn Peters' three-run homer in the top of the fifth. That lead looked like it would hold up until Nebraska's two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh.

The game-winning run was unearned as Trinity Harrington took the loss for CSU, allowing 10 runs (nine earned) in a complete-game effort.

Nebraska closes out the home portion of its fall exhibition game with a Sunday late afternoon game against UNO in the final game of the Husker Fall Classic.
