Huskers Shut Out Northern Iowa

Lincoln - Emily Lockman and Tatum Edwards combined on a four-hit shutout to lift the 19th-ranked Nebraska softball team to a 4-0 victory over Northern Iowa on Wednesday at Bowlin Stadium.

Lockman, a sophomore right-hander, earned the start and went 4.0 innings, allowing three hits to improve to 13-4 on the season. Edwards, a senior right-hander, gave up only one single over the final 3.0 innings to earn her third save this spring.

Offensively, freshman Kat Woolman finished 3-for-3 with one RBI, establishing a career high in hits. Junior Kylee Muir was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Sophomore Dawna Tyson added Nebraska's other RBI.

After being retired in order in the first two innings, Nebraska scored one run in the bottom of the third. Muir began the inning with a single and Woolman followed with a bunt single. On Woolman's bunt, a throwing error allowed Muir to move to third, and she then scored on a ground ball from Tyson.

Northern Iowa missed a chance to tie the game in the top of the fourth. A leadoff walk and a one-out double put Panthers at second and third with one out before a pop out and a strikeout ended the threat.

The Huskers then put up three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-0 lead. With a runner on first and two outs, sophomore Kiki Stokes singled before Muir lined a two-run double to the gap in right center. Woolman followed with an RBI single.

The four runs were more than enough for Tatum Edwards, who retired 10 of the 12 batters she faced to preserve the victory.

Jamie Fisher (12-5) took the loss for Northern Iowa, which fell to 21-10 on the season. Fisher allowed four runs on five hits in 4.0 innings.

The Huskers return to conference play this weekend, hosting Iowa for a three-game series at Bowlin Stadium.
