Fayetteville, Ark. - A large contingent of Nebraska track and field student-athletes traveled to Fayetteville, Arkansas to take part in the Tyson Invitational on Friday. Day one action saw the Huskers earn three individual titles and nine personal-best marks that put NU amongst the best in the Big Ten.
On the women's side, Shawnice Williams set a personal best in the 800 meters by nearly five seconds to earn the first place prize. The senior clocked in at 2:07.67 which ranks fifth best in the Big Ten Conference at the start of the day. Sophomore pole vaulter Paula Andrie grasped top honors with a height of 12-9 1/2 (3.90m) as she continued to excel indoors.
Jazmin McCoy notched an impressive showing in the long jump competition as she leaped to top of the Big Ten with a mark of 20-5 (6.22m) on her way to a runner-up finish in the event. Tierra Williams earned the No. 5 spot in the league with a jump of 19-10 3/4 (6.06m) as she took fourth in Arkansas.
Freshman Kadecia Baird improved upon her second-best Big Ten 400 meter time with a 53.34 career-best performance, while Mara Weekes also tallied a personal-best mark of 54.68.
For the men, Jacob Olson earned the victory in the mile after stopping the watch at 4:07.34 and a personal best, while his fellow redshirt freshman classmate Matt Gilbert was the next athlete to cross the line at 4:08.82 for his career mark.
Senior Patrick Raedler came through with a big mark in the long jump as he flew 25-9 1/2 (7.86m). Raedler's distance would rank as the fourth-best mark at the start of the day on his way to taking third in the elite championship flight.
Travis Englund posted his personal best in the long jump with the fifth-best conference distance of 24-2 1/2 (7.38m) to finish fifth at the Tyson. Seth Wiedel also recorded a season-best 24-7 1/4 (7.50m) in the pits.
Will Lohman muscled his way to a PR in the weight throw at 65-4 1/2 (19.92m) and inside the conference top ten.
The Huskers will be back for the second and final day of competition tomorrow at the Tyson Invitational. Events are scheduled to begin at noon.
