Huskers Complete Sweep with 10-3 Win

Lincoln - Sophomores Hailey Decker and Dawna Tyson combined for seven hits and five RBIs to power the Nebraska softball team to a 10-3 victory over Drake, completing a doubleheader sweep for the Huskers on Friday night at Bowlin Stadium.

The classmates sparked a nine-hit Nebraska effort, after the Huskers managed just four hits in a 3-2, come-from-behind win in game one. Tyson finished 3-for-4 with a single, a double, a triple and four RBIs, while Decker was 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. In the doubleheader, Tyson was 5-for-7, while Decker finished 5-for-6 with two walks.

The offense supported sophomore right-hander Emily Lockman, who allowed three runs on six hits in a complete-game effort. After allowing three runs over the first 3.0 innings, Lockman surrendered just one single while retiring 13 of the final 14 hitters.

After being frustrated for most of game one, the Huskers struck for three runs in the bottom of the first inning of the nightcap. Senior Tatum Edwards led off the game with a double and advanced to third on a ground out from freshman MJ Knighten. Senior Taylor Edwards then brought her twin sister home with a sacrifice bunt and an error allowed Taylor to reach first base safely. Decker followed with a single before Tyson capped the three-run inning with a two-run double off the top of the fence in right center.

Drake cut the lead to 3-1 when Laura Brewer led off the top of the second with a home run to right field.

Nebraska responded by adding to its lead in the bottom of the second. Sophomore Sammi Noland reached on an error to get things started before classmate Kiki Stokes was hit by a pitch. With one out, Knighten was also hit by a pitch to load the bases. Taylor Edwards then walked on four pitches to score Noland and give Nebraska a 4-1 lead. Decker then beat out a check-swing, infield single that scored Stokes with the second run of the frame. After falling behind in the count 0-2, senior Kylee Muir grounded a two-run single through the right side to plate Knighten and freshman pinch runner Lotte Sjulin. Two pitches later, Tyson added Nebraska's third straight run-producing hit with an RBI single to right that gave the Huskers an 8-1 lead.

Drake answered with two runs in the top of the third. Back-to-back doubles to begin the inning produced a run, before a two-out passed ball allowed a second run to score.

The Huskers again answered the Bulldgos' run in the bottom of the frame. A leadoff error allowed Stokes to reach. A groundout and a walk put Stokes on third and Knighten on first, before Stokes scored on a sacrifice fly from Taylor Edwards.

After being held scoreless for the first time in the bottom of the fourth, the Huskers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth on a pair of walks and a single from Decker. Tyson then gave Nebraska a 10-3 lead and drove in her fourth run of the game with an RBI ground out.

The Huskers wrap up their fall exhibition season on Sunday with a doubleheader against Creighton beginning at 1 p.m. Admission is free and fans are encouraged wear pink for Breast Cancer Awareness.
