Huskers Run-Rule Bison, 11-0

Lincoln - The 20th-ranked Nebraska softball team rebounded from a disappointing performance in game one to salvage a doubleheader split with an 11-0 run-rule victory over North Dakota State in game two Wednesday at Bowlin Stadium.

The Huskers scored in each of their four innings at bat, slugging three doubles and three home runs. Junior Tatum Edwards homered twice, while her twin sister Taylor added a home run of her own. The two-homer game was the fifth of Tatum's career, while the twins each homered in the same game for the ninth time in their careers.

Tatum Edwards also excelled in the circle, tossing a three-hit shutout to improve to 13-4 on the year. The win was her sixth straight victory, while Edwards extended her streak to 32.0 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. The shutout was Edwards' sixth of the season.

The Edwards twins weren't the only stars for the Huskers in game two of the doubleheader. Senior Brooke Thomason drove in three runs, while freshman Dawna Tyson produced two hits and an RBI. Classmate Kiki Stokes, senior Gabby Banda and Taylor Edwards each scored a pair of runs, while Tatum Edwards scored three runs.

With the win, Nebraska improved to 20-6 on the year, while North Dakota State dropped to 13-13. Krista Menke (4-7), a native of Friend, Neb., took the loss allowing six runs (five earned) in 1.1 innings.

After being shut out in game one, Taylor Edwards put the Huskers on the board early in game two with a two-run homer three batters into the bottom of the first inning.

Freshman Alicia Armstrong gave Nebraska a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second with an RBI double that scored Tatum Edwards, who drew a leadoff walk. Armstrong advanced to third on a passed ball before Stokes reached on an error. Stokes then stole second and on the play, an error on the second baseman allowed Armstrong to score. Banda then recorded an RBI double to score Stokes, before Tyson capped the four-run inning with a two-out, RBI single.

Tatum Edwards then gave the Huskers a 7-0 lead when she lined a 1-2 pitch over the fence in left for a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the third inning. Freshman Hailey Decker followed with a walk, before Stokes reached on a one-out single to put Huskers at first and second. Taylor Edwards was then hit by a two-out pitch before Thomason cleared the bases with a two-out, three-run double that gave Nebraska a 10-0 lead.

Tatum Edwards made it leadoff home runs in back-to-back innings when she closed out the scoring with a solo home run to open the bottom of the fourth, her team-leading seventh home run of the year.

The Huskers are next in action this weekend when they open Big Ten Conference play against Northwestern. Nebraska is scheduled to host the Wildcats on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Bowlin Stadium.
