Tatum Edwards Leads Huskers Past Florida State

Cathedral City, Calif. - Junior Tatum Edwards lifted the Nebraska softball team to a 2-0 victory over No. 23 Florida State in the first of two games Sunday, marking the Huskers' first win over a ranked team this season.

Edwards fired a four-hit shutout in the circle and produced the game's lone runs with a two-run single. In the circle, Edwards improved to 7-3 on the year, striking out five and walking only one. Offensively, Edwards finished 1-for-3 with the pair of RBIs.

In addition to Edwards' clutch hit, senior Brooke Thomason finished 3-for-3 with a trio of singles for the Huskers, who out-hit Florida State, 6-4. Classmate Gabby Banda added a pair of singles of her own.

Lacey Waldrop (4-2) took the loss for the Seminoles, who fell to 9-5 on the year. Waldrop allowed two runs on six hits in a complete-game effort.

Neither team mounted much of an offensive threat until the top of the fourth. Banda began the frame with a single, before junior Taylor Edwards walked and Thomason followed with a single to load the bases with no outs. Tatum Edwards then chopped a ground ball that bounced over the second baseman's head and into right field for a two-run single. Leading 2-0, the Huskers had a chance to add to the advantage with runners at second and third and still no outs, but the next three hitters were retired without advancing the runners.

Florida State got a runner to third base for the first time in the bottom of the fifth, as an infield single, an error and a walk loaded the bases with two outs. But Tatum Edwards escaped the jam by getting Celeste Gomez to ground out to second.

Edwards retired the side in order in the sixth, before hitting the leadoff batter in the bottom of the seventh. But she quickly recovered to retire the next three batters and preserve her second shutout of the season.

Nebraska (11-3) wraps up play at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic against eighth-ranked Cal.
