Palm Desert, Calif. - Scott Willman and Manuel Lavin each shot even-par 72s in the opening round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Saturday, leading the Nebraska men's golf team to a score of 305. The second round was suspended due to darkness and will resume on Sunday.
The Huskers' 305 total in the first round puts them in 21st place at The Classic Club, a par-72, 7,305-yard layout. UNLV leads the team competition by one stroke over Auburn after Saturday's 279.
Willman, who is playing in the No. 1 position for NU, used a back-nine 35 after his front-nine 37 en route to an even-par round. The score marks his seventh round of even par or better during the 2011-12 campaign. Willman is tied for 23rd.
Lavin is also tied for 23rd after posting 72 in the first round. The sophomore carded a 34 on the front nine and a 38 on the back nine. Lavin's 72 marks his fourth even-par round of the season.
Ryan Grassel added an 8-over-par 80 to the Husker total in his first stroke play event for the team. The sophomore transfer used a 39 going out and a 41 coming in for his first-day total.
Jordan Reinertson and Neil Dufford carded 81 and 83, respectively on Saturday. Reinertson, playing in his third event of the season, fared better on the front nine with a 40 before his back-nine 41. Dufford, who has competed in every tournament for Nebraska this season, shot 43 on the front before pacing his way to a 40 on the back nine.
The tournament's second round will resume Sunday at 9:30 a.m. (Central Time) where the players left off on Saturday. The final round will tee off immediately following the second round. Check Huskers.com for final results from the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.
