Senior (2013-14)
A leader in the classroom, Ryan Grassel earned the Dick Spangler Scholarship prior to the season, and made one appearance as an individual during the 2013-14 campaign. At the Oak Hill Intercollegiate in the spring, Grassel tied for 32nd at 237.

Junior (2012-13)
Grassel made one appearance as a junior, tying for 31st at the Fairway Club Invitational as an individual. He was one of 33 Husker student-athletes to earn a HERO Leadership Award in 2013.

Sophomore (2011-12)
Grassel transferred to Nebraska before the spring season and competed in five tournaments. Grassel opened his Husker career at the Big Ten Match Play, where he won his first match against Michigan State’s Will Morris, 6&5. Grassel achieved his best score and finish at the Jackrabbit Invitational, where he tied for 55th at 228. He posted a 79.69 stroke average in 13 rounds for the Huskers.

Grassel earned Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll accolades for his work in the classroom during the spring semester, earning a 4.0 grade-point average.

Before Nebraska
Grassel transferred to Nebraska from Sonoma State University, where he played for one season after sitting out during the fall 2011 campaign. As a freshman, Grassel competed in 24 rounds for the Seawolves, including conference, regionals and nationals, helping the team to an 11th-place finish at the NCAA Division II Championship. He had a scoring average of 75.8 with a low round of 70.

During the season, Grassel posted two top-10 finishes, including a third-place finish after posting 1-under-par 215 at the Sonoma State Invitational. He also recorded a ninth-place finish at the Argonaut Invitational, shooting a 1-over-par 217. Grassel earned academic recognition from the CCAA conference by achieving a 4.0 grade-point average during his freshman year.

High School
Grassel graduated from Chesterton High School in Chesterton, Ind. He won 10 tournaments during his career, leading the Trojans to two sectional titles and one regional title as well as an eighth-place finish at the 2008 single class state tournament and a sixth-place result in 2009. Grassel was named Team MVP four times as well as earning Duneland Athletic Conference MVP twice. He earned first-team all-area accolades all four years and was named area player of the year twice.

In 2010, Grassel won the Pepsi Little People’s Collegiate Championship and the Indiana Age Group Championship. He earned second place at the Indiana State Junior and finished in the top 10 at the Indiana Open.

Grassel played in the 2008 U.S. Junior Amateur at Shoal Creek and also won multiple events on junior tours, such as the PJGT and FCWT. He was named a second-team All-American by FCWT. Grassel has represented the state of Indiana three times in junior team events.

Grassel also excelled on the soccer field in high school, helping the Trojans win a sectional championship during his senior season. Additionally, he earned academic all-state honors in soccer twice.

Personal
Ryan is the son of Rick and Mary Grassel. His older brother Kyle plays golf at the Colorado School of Mines and his younger sister Kelly won the 2011 Indiana State High School Golf Championship. Ryan was born on Jan. 3, 1992 in Meyrin, Switzerland, and is majoring in economics, global studies and political science. He earned Academic All-Big Ten honors with a perfect 4.0 GPA during the 2012-13 academic year, and also made the team in 2014. He was a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar in 2013. He is a six-time member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll.
