Huskers Start Spring Season at Big Ten Match Play

Bradenton, Fla. - The Nebraska men's golf team will open its spring 2012 campaign by appearing in the Big Ten Match Play Championship on Friday and Saturday.

The Big Ten Match Play, which is in its fourth year, will be contested at the Concession Golf Club, a par-72, 7,470-yard layout, in Bradenton, Fla. The Huskers will represent the No. 12 seed, and will open play on Friday morning against the No. 5 seed, Michigan State. The match starts at 7 a.m. (Central Time).

NU will have six players compete at the Big Ten Match Play. Newcomer Ryan Grassel, who transferred from Sonoma State University in the offseason, will tee off on the first hole at 7 a.m. (Central Time) along with Jordan Reinertson. In the 7:10 a.m. timeslot for the Huskers will be Ross Dickson and Neil Dufford. At 7:20 a.m., Scott Willman and Manuel Lavin will tee it up.

Following the morning wave on Friday, the Huskers will play again in the afternoon. If Nebraska wins, it will face No. 4 Purdue, starting at 12:30 p.m. on Hole No. 1. If Nebraska loses its first round match, the Huskers will go against the loser of No. 6 Ohio State and No. 11 Wisconsin. That match would start at 1 p.m. on the first hole. Play will continue on Saturday with a morning wave and afternoon wave.

The Big Ten Match Play will be the Huskers' sixth tournament of the year. Nebraska opened the 2011-12 campaign with a victory at the Fairway Club Invitational in September. The following week, the Huskers finished 12th at the Kansas Invitational. NU would go on to take 12th place in all three of its events in October, which included the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate, the Firestone Invitational and the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate.
