Geibert and Weinstein?s Title Bid Falls Short

Midland, Texas—Nebraska women’s tennis doubles team Madeleine Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein fell short in their bid for the Midland Invitational doubles title on Sunday. The duo dropped the final match to end their competition at Midland with a doubles record of 3-1.

No. 2 seeded Geibert and Weinstein reached the final after a first-round bye and wins over pairs from UT-Arlington, Texas A&M and TCU. The pair faced Texas Tech’s Samantha Adams and Kenna Kilgo, falling by a score of 8-4.

The match marked the first time an NU individual or pair has reached a Midland Invitational final since Mary Weatherholt reached the final in 2009. It also marked both Geibert and Weinstein’s first appearance in a Midland final during their respective careers at NU.

Frederike Putthoff also appeared in an additional singles match for the Huskers at Midland on Sunday, facing Texas A&M’s Dané Vorster. Putthoff won the matchup, 6-4, 7-6 (5) to finish the weekend with a 2-2 singles mark.

Sunday’s play wrapped up NU’s time at the Midland Invitational. The team will have a week off before they travel to the Riviera All-American on Oct. 1-9. The tournament will be held in Los Angeles, Calif.
