Griva, Hitchler Win Drake Relays Titles

Des Moines, Iowa - The Nebraska track and field team finished the 102 running of the Drake Relays on Saturday with two more event titles. Freshman Mara Griva and junior Tyler Hitchler each earned meet titles for the first time in their careers.

One week after talking over the NCAA lead in the long jump with her leap of 21-7 ¼ at the Kansas Relays, Griva put herself into the top ten of the triple jump with her leap of 43-3 ¾. Griva cleared the mark on her second attempt of the competition with a -1.4 m/s wind reading. The freshman still has room to grow as the mark fell short of her personal best of 43-7. Teammate Tara Korshoj joined Griva in the top five with her fourth-place jump of 41-6.

Hitchler captured another Drake Relays title in the men's discus with his throw of 183-0. Hitchler recorded the mark on his third attempt and it beat out Wisconsin's Danny Block by just two inches.

Also in the throws, Jade Siegel broke her previous best of 193-9 in the hammer throw with a toss of 197-2. In a talent-field group, the throw ranked seventh overall and was sixth among collegiate competitors. Siegel now moves into the No. 1 spot on the Big 12 performance list as she passed Iowa State's Britta Christofferson (195-8).

The women's 4x100-shuttle hurdle relay was first to hit the track at 8:20 a.m. for the event's prelims. Arna Erega, Karyn LaCour, Chantae McMillan and Rachel Butler teamed for the third best qualifying time at 57.39. They would improve their time to 56.15 in the finals, but were unable to move up and finished third in the finals.

Individually in the hurdles, Eric Lund entered the weekend ranked 12th in the NCAA with a time of 50.92 in the 400 hurdles. The senior from Milford, Neb., bettered the time with his third-place finish of 50.59. He also finished sixth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.08.

The Huskers will now return to Lincoln for tomorrow's Nebraska Open at Ed Weir Stadium. The meet is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. and more information can be found at Huskers.com.
