Hutchinson, Kan. - The Nebraska men's golf team finished eighth in their final appearance at the Big 12 Championship after shooting 308 in Wednesday's final round.
The Huskers finished with 1,194 strokes for the 72-hole event and the eighth-place finish marked NU's fourth-best result at the Big 12 Championship in the last 12 years. The Huskers had a chance to match last year's seventh-place result before a tough finish. Starting on the back nine, NU played their first 15 holes at 23-over-par and their last three holes (Nos. 7-9) in 19-over-par. Baylor, who took seventh-place, finished nine shots ahead of Nebraska.
The wind gusts at Prairie Dunes Country Club, a par-70, 6,759-yard layout, during Wednesday's fourth round reached 45 mph and proved to be a deciding factor. Oklahoma State's Peter Uihlein was the only player in the 60-man field that didn't shoot over par as he fired an even-par 70. Uihlein's low score helped the Cowboys secure their fifth consecutive Big 12 Championship as they prevailed over Texas A&M by 13 strokes.
Andrew Wyatt led the Huskers as he has much of the season with a 17-over-par 297 stroke total. The senior earned a tie for 26th finish after scoring a 7-over-par 77 in the final round. Wyatt has broken 80 in 35 out of 36 rounds for the Huskers this season.
Brett Nymeyer had the lowest Husker score on Wednesday with a 5-over-par 75. The senior's consistent play through the week included scores of 75, 74 and 76 in the first three rounds for a 72-hole total of 300. Nymeyer tied for 31st and played the par-5s in 4-under this week, while birdieing the 519-yard 17th hole in all four rounds.
Neil Dufford, playing in his first Big 12 Championship, tied for 36th. The sophomore posted an 84 on the final day, putting his 72-hole total at 302. In the first three rounds, Dufford carded a 72 as well as a pair of 73s.
Mike Coatman and Scott Willman tied for 44th; accumulating 306 strokes over four rounds. Coatman had two birdies in the final round en route to a 9-over-par 79. Willman's last 18 holes, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 17th hole, added a 7-over-par 77 to the Husker total.
Oklahoma State's Morgan Hoffmann took home medalist honors, finishing with an even-par 280 for the tournament. Hoffmann defeated fellow teammate and runner-up Kevin Tway by five strokes as Texas A&M's Jordan Russell took third, at 6-over-par.
