Hutchinson, Kan. – The Nebraska men’s golf team shot 286 in the first round, followed by 303 in the second round of the Big 12 Championship to put the Huskers in sixth place after 36 holes.
The Huskers’ current 589 total is 14 strokes behind team leader and four-time defending champion Oklahoma State at the halfway point of the tournament. NU’s first round 286 marked their lowest score in a Big 12 Championship round since the second round of the 1999 tournament, when the Huskers scored 284. They went on to finish second that year.
The Huskers, who sat in a three-way tie for second, were three shots behind Oklahoma State after 18 holes, but lost momentum in the second round with a 303. NU managed only five birdies as a team in the second round, while carding 25 bogeys and six double bogeys at Prairie Dunes Country Club, a par-70, 6,759-yard layout.
Neil Dufford led the way for the Huskers with a first round 72 and a second round 73, putting his two-round total at 5-over-par 145. The sophomore, who is tied for eighth individually, shot a front nine 40 in the first round, followed by a bogey-free 32 on the back nine. In his second round, Dufford used 16 pars en route to a 3-over-par 73.
Andrew Wyatt came up big for the Huskers in the first round, firing a 1-under-par 69 and putting him in a tie for third. But the senior faded to a second round 79, which puts him at 8-over-par 148, in a tie for 25th. Wyatt’s first round 69 marked his sixth subpar round of the 2010-11 campaign.
Tied for 31st is Brett Nymeyer, who paced his way to a 75 and 74 on the first day. The senior’s 9-over-par 149 performance through 36 holes was helped in large part to his playing of the par-5s in 3-under.
Scott Willman is tied for 36th after 10-over-par 150 through two rounds. The junior posted 72 in the first round, followed by 78 in the second round. One shot behind Willman is senior Mike Coatman, at 151 strokes. In the first round, Coatman parred every hole on the front nine, which led to a 3-over-par 73. He followed that with a 78 in the second round.
A pair of Oklahoma State Cowboys is the lead after day one as Morgan Hoffmann and Kevin Tway each shot 1-under-par 139. Hoffmann shot 70 and 69 in the opening rounds, while Tway fired 66 and 73. Oklahoma’s Ryan Sirman is one shot back, at even-par 140, with 36 holes to play.
The Huskers tee off on the first hole at 8 a.m. Tuesday with Texas A&M and Texas Tech.
