Huskers Fly Past Bluejays, 10-2

Omaha - Junior Ashley Guile and freshman Taylor Edwards each had four RBIs to lead the 12th-ranked Nebraska softball team to a 10-2, five-inning victory over the Creighton Bluejays on Wednesday night in Omaha.

The win gave Nebraska a season sweep over Creighton for the second straight year, while the Huskers improved to 31-6 on the season. NU scored runs in every inning, while out-hitting Creighton, 11-4. Every Husker starter who had an official at bat recorded a hit, including three multi-hit efforts.

Guile finished 2-for-4 with a double and a season-high-tying four RBIs, while Taylor Edwards was also 2-for-4 with a walk and a career-high four RBIs. Junior Nikki Haget also added two hits, while scoring twice. Sophomore Gabby Banda also scored a pair of runs while going 0-for-0 with two walks and a hit-by-pitch. Freshman Tatum Edwards hit the lone home run of the game, her 11th of the season.

In addition to her home run, Tatum Edwards earned the win in the circle, improving to 6-0 in her career. In 3.1 innings, Edwards allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits, striking out five and walking a pair. Junior right-hander Ashley Hagemann came on in relief and pitched a scoreless 1.2 innings, striking out five and allowing one walk and one hit.

Nebraska jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Haget led off with a single, before back-to-back walks to sophomore Brooke Thomason and senior Julie Brechtel loaded the bases with one out. Guile then delivered an RBI single down the left field line to score Haget with the game's first run. The bases were still full of Huskers before a strikeout and a foul out ended the inning.

Creighton nearly got the run back in the bottom of the first. Ellen Homan led off with a single and advanced to second on an error. She moved to third on a ground out before Christa Ruf failed to make contact on a squeeze attempt and Nebraska caught Homan in a rundown and tagged her out.

The Huskers added four runs with two outs in the top of the second. Banda was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and scored two batters later on an RBI single from freshman Taylor Edwards. Thomason then singled and Brechtel was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the second straight inning. Guile came through again with a clutch hit, this time clearing the bases with a three-run double that pushed Nebraska's lead to 5-0.

Nebraska continued to tack on runs in the third. Banda got things started with a one-out walk, before redshirt freshman Kylee Muir lined a single to the gap in right center. Haget then reached on an infield single to load the bases for Taylor Edwards, who delivered a two-run single to left to make it 7-0. Brechtel then made it 8-0 with a two-out, RBI single through the right side.

Creighton got a run back in the bottom of the third. Tatum Edwards quickly retired the first two batters before a double and an error put the Bluejays on the board.

The Huskers answered the run in the top of the fourth. Tatum Edwards was hit by the first pitch of the inning and senior Heidi Foland followed with a double down the right field line. A walk loaded the bases with no outs, before Creighton recorded two outs without allowing a run to score. That brought Taylor Edwards to the plate, and she picked up her fourth RBI of the day with a five-pitch walk to make it 9-1.

Nebraska returned the favor with a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the frame that made the score 9-2 and marked the end of the night for Tatum Edwards. Hagemann came on with the bases loaded and one out and struck out the next two batters to prevent any further damage.

Tatum Edwards then got the run back in the bottom of the frame with a two-out, solo home run to right center to make it 10-2. That home run brought the run-rule back into effect, and Hagemann closed out the five-inning victory by working around a walk and a double in the bottom of the fifth.

Sammy Snygg (1-7) took the loss for Creighton, which fell to 18-18 on the year. Snygg allowed five runs on five hits in 2.0 innings.

Nebraska hits the road again this weekend, when the Huskers travel to College Station, Texas, for a two-game conference series with No. 22 Texas A&M.
