Lincoln - The NCAA sent out its invitations for the women's gymnastics regional championships on Monday afternoon, setting the six-team field at the NCAA Corvallis Regional. Competition will be hosted by the Oregon State University at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore., on Saturday, April 2 at 6 p.m. (CST).
Nebraska, which is 12-7 on the season and ranked 10th nationally, will face No. 3 Oregon State in addition to No. 15 Iowa, Southern Utah, San Jose State and Michigan State. The competition also includes five all-around competitors and one individual event specialist per event.
The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors, who are not on an advancing team, will receive an automatic berth to the 2011 NCAA Championships hosted by Kent State University and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission in Cleveland, Ohio, April 15-17. In addition, the event winners will advance to the national championships if they are not part of a qualifying team or the all-around qualifiers.
As the regional's No. 2 seed, Nebraska will open the competition on beam, next with a bye before floor, floor, followed by vault, bye and ending with bars.
NU will be led Big 12 Champions - seniors Erin Davis and Maria Scaffidi - into the Corvallis Regional after combining for three Big 12 event titles last weekend and helping Nebraska claim the 2011 Big 12 Championship. The Huskers will also be anchored by All-Big 12 honorees junior Lora Evenstad, sophomore Janelle Giblin and freshman Jamie Schleppenbach.
