Huskers Head South for First Weekend of Break

For the Huskers' first weekend of spring break, Nebraska will travel south to Hattiesburg, Miss., to take on the Crusaders of William Carey. After two home wins this past weekend, the Huskers are 11-4, while winning eight of their last 10 matches, and enter the weekend ranked No. 36 in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. William Carey is coming off a loss to Auburn University-Montgomery and is 6-5 on the season. The Huskers will face the Crusaders on Saturday, March 19 at 2 p.m. This will be the first time in the program's history that the Huskers have faced the Southern States Athletic Conference foe.

 

Last Weekend: Huskers Go 2-0 at Home
Nebraska won both of its home matches last Saturday at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The Huskers defeated Wichita State, 6-1, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City, 7-0.

In the first match of the day, the Huskers started off by winning the doubles point and kept the momentum going into singles play to win five of the six matches.

Winning at the No. 1 spot in the Huskers line-up was Calin Paar, who defeated Vald Marinescu in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Defeating the Shockers' Matheus Pereira,6-2, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot was Nebraska's Christopher Aumueller.

Nebraska's Andre Stenger defeated Guillermo Nicol, 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot. Sebastian Florczyk won his 11th match of the year when he defeated WSU's Valentine Mihai, 6-0, 6-0. Winning the sixth point of the match for the Huskers was Robert Schulze. He defeated Juan Esstensorro, 6-7, 6-1, 10-7, at the No. 6 spot.

Against UMKC, the Huskers won all seven points. Like their first match of the day, the Huskers started the match by winning the doubles point. At the No. 3 spot, Paar and Schulze clinched the point when they defeated Grant Fleming and Nino Hasandedic, 8-3. The Huskers ended up winning all three doubles matches.

The Huskers maintained the momentum in singles play when they won all six matches in straight sets.

The first win in singles play came when Aumueller defeated UMKC's Fleming 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot. Gaining the third point for the Huskers was Tom Blackwell who defeated Cameron Schoenhofer, 6-2, 6-1. Blackwell was at the No. 6 spot in the Huskers' line-up. NU's match clinching point came when Florczyk won his 12th match of the year, defeating UMKC's Adbulraham Alawadhi, 6-2, 6-1.

Winning the fifth point for the Huskers was Eric Sock. He defeated Gustavo Guerin, 6-1, 6-0. The sixth point came when NU's Stenger downed the Kangaroo's Adbulraham Alawadhi, 6-2, 6-1. The final point of the night for the Huskers came when Paar was victorious over UMKC's Hasandedic, 6-4, 7-6,at the No. 1 spot for NU.

Sebastian Florczyk: The Freshman Sensation
Freshman Sebastian Florczyk owns a 12-1 record this spring while seeing most of his time at the tail end of the Huskers line-up. Florczyk began the year playing at the No. 6 spot and went 8-1, before recently climbing to the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, where he has a combined 4-0 record, while going 2-0 at each spot. The last match the freshman lost came at Washington on Feb. 5. Florczyk fell to the Huskies' Marton Bots, 7-5, 6-1.

After Two Wins, Huskers Drop
In the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, the Huskers dropped five spots to No. 36. The Huskers' have one singles player ranked in No. 81 Christopher Aumueller. The Huskers doubles team of Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim are ranked No. 65. The duo is 9-2 on the spring while playing their matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots.

Scouting the William Carey Crusaders
William Carey is 6-5 on the year after coming off a loss to Auburn University-Montgomery. The Crusaders own a 3-0 record in Southern States Athletic Conference play. William Carey is 2-0 at home. A player to watch out for is freshman Jody Claassen, who is 10-0 on the year. Claassen has played all 10 matches at the No. 1 spot in the Crusaders' line-up. The Crusaders are coached by Christoph Schaefer who is in his second season at the helm.
