LINCOLN – The No. 31 Nebraska Cornhuskers won both of their home matches on Saturday at the Nebraska Tennis Center, giving them six straight wins while winning eight of their last 10 matches. The two wins also give the Huskers a record of 11-4 on the year with a 5-1 mark at home. The Huskers defeated Wichita State, 6-1, and the University of Missouri – Kansas City, 7-0.
In the first match of the day, the Huskers started off by winning the doubles point and would keep the momentum going into singles play to win five of the six singles matches.
Winning at the No. 1 spot in the Huskers’ line-up was Calin Paar, who defeated Vald Marinescu in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Defeating the Shockers’ Matheus Pereira, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot was Nebraska’s Christopher Aumueller.
Nebraska’s Andre Stenger defeated Guillermo Nicol, 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot. Sebastian Florczyk won his 11th match of the year when he defeated WSU’s Valentine Mihai, 6-0, 6-0. Winning the sixth point of the match for the Huskers was Robert Schulze. He defeated, 6-7, 6-1, 10-7, Juan Esstensorro. Schulze was in the No. 6 spot.
Winning the lone point for the Shockers was David Cavalcanti. He downed NU’s Benedikt Lindheim 6-3, 3-6, 10-8.
Against UMKC, the Huskers won all seven points. Like their first match of the day, the Huskers started the match off by winning the doubles point. At the No. 3 spot, Calin Paar and Robert Schulze clinched the point when they defeated Grant Fleming and Nino Hasandedic, 8-3. The Huskers’ ended up winning all three doubles matches.
The Huskers kept the momentum going in singles play when they won all six singles matches in straight sets.
The first win in singles play came when NU’s Christopher Aumueller defeated UMKC’s Grant Fleming 6-0, 6-2. Aumueller was playing at the No. 2 spot. Gaining the third point for the Huskers was Tom Blackwell who defeated Cameron Schoenhofer, 6-2, 6-1. Blackwell was at the No. 6 spot in the Huskers’ line-up. The Huskers match clinching point came when Sebastian Florczyk won his 12th match of the year. Florczyk defeated UMKC’s Adbulraham Alawadhi, 6-2, 6-1.
Winning the fifth point for the Huskers was Eric Sock. He defeated Gustavo Guerin, 6-1, 6-0. The sixth point came when NU’s Andre Stenger downed the Kangaroo’s Adbulraham Alawadhi, 6-2, 6-1. The final point of the night for the Huskers came when Calin Paar was victorious over UMKC’s Nino Hasandedic, 6-4, 7-6. Paar was playing at the No. 1 spot for NU.
After the match, Nebraska’s head coach Kerry McDermott talked about the day.
“I’m excited we got the two wins today and got to use the whole squad,” McDermott said. “We played good doubles and followed it up with good singles play.”
The Huskers return to action on Saturday, March 19, when they travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., to take on William Carey. The match begins at 2 p.m.
