Austin, Texas- The Nebraska swimming and diving team finished up their first full day of competition at the Big 12 Championships Thursday evening. The Huskers had four events that counted toward their final point total.
The Huskers started the night off with a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Their time of 1:32.62 was just .07 off of the all-time top five.The team consisted of Hayley Martin, Ariel Weech, Lexie Halberstadt and Kelsey Grushecky. The Huskers finished Texas, Texas A&M, Missouri and Kansas.
The three meter dive event saw Kaitlan Walker, Alyson Ramsey, Amy Herman and Payton Michaud all earn points from the preliminary round. Walker finished tenth overall at 281.30. Alyson Ramesey finished eleventh at 279.30. Maren Taylor won the event. The Texas diver's score of 344.80 was enough to win by 4.40 points over Loren Figueroa of Missouri.
The next event was the 500-yard freestyle finals which saw Bailey Pons beat her own fifth-fastest time in Nebraska school history at 4:49.05. Earlier in the day during preliminaries, she set the fifth-fastest time at 4:50.06. She finished eleventh in the event overall, earning six points for the Huskers. Brandie Kavalec set a career-best time of 4:52.73 in the event as well. Her previous career-best time in the 500-free was 4:58.53. Cammile Adams of Texas A&M won the event with her time of 4.39.14. Sarah Henry of Texas A&M finished in second.
The 200-IM finals saw Kelsey Larson, Ellan Dufour and Meredith Matthies set career-best times in the event. Larson set her best time ever in 2:04.97, beating her previous best by .09. Dufour's time of 2:05.44 was 2.43 faster than her previous career best of 2:05.44. Finally, Meredith Matthies set her best ever time of 2:07.01. Texas' Karlee Bispo won the event with a time of 1:55.15. She was followed by Lindsay King of Texas A&M at 1:57.24
The final event of the night, the 50-yard freestyle, Ariel Weech placed ninth with her 23.05 effort. It was a career-best time and is the fifth-fastest time in NU history. Hayley Martin set her career-best time in 23.37. Her time earned her an eleventh-place finish in the event. Lexie Halberstadt also earned points for NU in a career-best effort at 23.53.
The event will resume at 10 a.m. Friday morning.
