Columbus, Ohio - Senior Jordan Burroughs had two technical falls and was one of three Huskers to win both matches on the day as the 16th-ranked Nebraska wrestling team opened the dual season Sunday by splitting contests with No. 11 Ohio State (24-11) and No. 20 Pittsburgh (10-22) at the Buckeye Duals in Columbus, Ohio.
Wrestling in a Nebraska uniform for the first time since Dec. 19, 2009, Burroughs was back in full force following his season-ending knee injury. The Sicklerville, N.J. native led the Huskers to a comeback win over No. 11 Ohio State with his technical fall victory over Jared Kusar. Prior to Burroughs' win, the Huskers had trailed 11-6 through five matches, gaining its two wins at 141 and 149 pounds from senior Mike Koehnlein (7-6 decision over Collin Palmer) and sophomore Ross Grande (7-6 decision over Sean Nemec). Burroughs' win tied the dual at 11-11 and began a string of five straight NU victories to close a 24-11 victory.
Following Burroughs' technical fall, redshirt freshman Caleb Kolb (174) earned his first varsity win with a 13-5 major decision over Robel Campbell to put NU ahead 15-11 in the team race. Sophomore Josh Ihnen (184) turned in the third straight Husker win with an 11-4 decision over Peter Capone, while senior Andy Johnson (184) upset No. 14 Cody Magrum (7-4 decision) and junior Tucker Lane (Hwt) downed Jonathan Hiles (4-1 decision) to put the Buckeyes away.
Earlier in the day, Nebraska was defeated by No. 22 Pittsburgh, 22-10. After falling behind 13-3, Burroughs dominated Adam Counterman with a technical fall victory (7:00, 25-0) to make it 13-7, but the Huskers only picked up one more win the rest of the way, a 7-5 decision from Ihnen over Max Thomusseit. Nebraska's other victory came from Koehnlein, as he downed Mike Tully by a 2-1 decision.
Nebraska will return home for its first home competition of the season this Saturday when the Huskers host Bucknell (Noon) and South Dakota State (2 p.m.) at the NU Coliseum. The home opener will be Military Appreciation Day, as all active and retired military members will receive free admission, in addition to fans with a Nebraska-Colorado football ticket stub.
