Huskers Finish Day Two at Central Regionals

Fayetteville, Ark. - The Nebraska women's tennis team had an excellent second day of competition at the UTSA-ITA Central Regional Championships on Friday.

The Huskers competed in the main draw, posting a 6-4 singles mark and a 2-3 record in doubles on the day.

In doubles action, Patricia Veresova and Mary Weatherholt defeated Kasia Tomalak and Stephanie Hollis of Saint Louis after receiving a first-round bye. The Husker duo will face Alexandra Kichoutkin and Jo-Anne Karatiana of Tulsa on Saturday.

Madeleine Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein received a first-round bye as well, but fell in a close second-round match by Lutfiana Budiharto and Raphaela Zotter of Wichita State.

Janine Weinreich and Jennifer Holmberg lost in the first round to Petra Chuda and Antea Huljev of Kansas State. Maike Zeppernick and Abby Buxton advanced to the second round after a first-round walkover. They then were defeated in the second round by Sarah Meghoufel and Sasha Belova of Oklahoma State.

All NU doubles teams that lost Friday will move into the consolation bracket of the tournament.

In singles action, the Huskers played well in the first round with all five competitors winning their match-ups. Geibert defeated Arkansas State's Emily Crowe, and Weinreich downed Tulsa's Bonny Davidson. Veresova knocked off Wichita State's Delia Damaschin, while Weinstein defeated Oklahoma State's Malika Rose. Jennifer Holmberg completed the Huskers' perfect first-round of singles by toppling Kasia Tomalak of Saint Louis.

In the second round of singles, Weinstein defeated Kate Lukomskaya of Arkansas in a close match. Weinstein's victory made her the only Husker to advance to the third round of singles. Geibert was defeated by  Maria Kalashnikova of Oklahoma, while Weinreich fell to Stephanie Hollis of St. Louis University. Veresova was defeated by Sonja Molnar of Iowa and Holmberg dropped her match against Nataliya Shatkovskaya of Oklahoma State.
