Nebraska Completes First Day at Central Regionals

Fayetteville, Ark.-The Nebraska women's tennis team wrapped up their first day of competition at the USTA-ITA Central Regional Championships with a 4-3 mark in qualifying singles. Seeing action today were Abby Buxton, Chelsea Finnegan, Jennifer Holmberg and Maike Zeppernick.

In the first round of action, Buxton was defeated by Jenny Herring of Arkansas State.  Finnegan was defeated by Annemijn Koenen of Missouri, and Zeppernick won her round over Ekaterina Kondrashova of Oral Roberts. Holmberg received a bye.

The second round saw Zeppernick fall to Kasia Tomalek of St. Louis University, while Holmberg picked up her first win of the tournament over Allison Burckhart of Oklahoma State.

After dropping into Qualifying Consolation action, Buxton defeated Ceara Howey of Arkansas State. Finnegan also posted a win over Galena Semova of Oral Roberts in the consolation bracket.

Holmberg will advance to play in the singles main draw tomorrow, where she will face Kasia Tomalak of St. Louis University. Madeleine Geibert will take on Emily Crowe of Arkansas State. Janine Weinreich will challenge Bonnie Davidson of Tulsa, while Patricia Versova will face Delia Damaschin of Wichita State. Rounding out the main draw competitors for Nebraska will be Stefanie Weinstein, who will face Malika Rose of Oklahoma State.

"The girls competed very well today as a whole," said Assistant Coach Hayden Perez. "Everyone gave their best effort and Coach Jacobson and I are very proud of them. We look forward to tomorrow as the Main Draw gets started and the Huskers take the court again."
