Workman Pitches Huskers Past Wildcats

Lincoln ? Junior right-hander Haley Workman fired a one-hit shutout to lead the Nebraska softball team to a 5-0 win over Wayne State. The win salvaged a doubleheader split for the Huskers on Friday night at Bowlin Stadium.

Workman, a junior college transfer, allowed only two baserunners in the game. She added four strikeouts and walked only one in an efficient 87-pitch effort. She did not allow a runner past second base and retired the last 12 batters she faced.

Stephanie Schmidt took the loss for Wayne State, despite not allowing an earned run. Three errors led to the four runs she allowed in 5.0 innings, as Schmidt surrendered six hits while striking out three and walking two.

Nebraska nearly jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first. Senior Heidi Foland drew a leadoff walk, stole second and was at third with one out following a ground out by classmate Julie Brechtel. Freshman Taylor Edwards then lined a ball to third, where Kristen Martinson made the catch and tagged Foland to complete an inning-ending double play.

The Huskers took the lead one inning later with a two-out rally. After the first two batters were quickly retired, redshirt freshman Kylee Muir walked. Freshman pinch-runner Morgan McCann promptly stole second and advanced to third on a wild throw from the catcher. She then scored the game’s first run on an infield single by junior Madison Drake.

NU stretched the lead to 4-0 with another two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore Brooke Thomason began the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from classmate Gabby Banda. Muir then reached on a single to center when Dani Sandel dove but had the ball bounce out of her glove. After a fly out, senior Tori Tyson hit a fly ball to left center that Sandel dropped, allowing two runs to score. The Huskers added a third run in the frame when junior Jamie Gay reached on an infield single and sophomore pinch-runner Megan Southworth alertly scored from second on the play.

Nebraska added another run off new pitcher Natalie Hauschild in the sixth. Thomason began the inning with a single to center. Banda then laid down a perfect bunt and beat it out for an infield single. On the play, Thomason was caught in a rundown between second and third. Wayne State threw wildly during the rundown, allowing Thomason to go to third, but she was then thrown out from right field attempting to score. Banda wound up at third with only one out and scored when Muir hit a liner that nicked the top of the glove of shortstop Sarah Gottschalk as she leapt to try to make the catch.

Muir finished 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI, while Thomason was 2-for-3, as Nebraska finished with nine hits. Kassie Nurton had Wayne State’s lone hit, a leadoff single in the top of the fourth inning.

The Huskers continue their fall exhibition season on Sunday, traveling to Omaha for a doubleheader at Creighton. Nebraska will close its fall exhibition season with a doubleheader against the NPF All-Stars on Saturday, Oct. 1 at Noon.
