Omaha - The Nebraska cross country team opened the 2010 season with a men's and women's sweep of the team titles at the Creighton/UNO Classic at Chili Greens on Saturday morning. Lara Crofford raced to an individual crown on the women's side, while Jesse Adams took second on the men's side to help the Huskers to a sweep for the second straight year.
The wins marked the third straight title in Omaha for the NU men, and the fifth title for the Husker women in past six years.
The Husker women were dominant over Creighton and Nebraska-Omaha, as Crofford led a 1-2-3-5-6 finish for the Huskers with a time of 18:11 in the 5K race. Crofford was followed by Ashley Miller, Erica Hamik, Blaire Dinsdale and Jen Webers.
"Based on other years we probably ran better than we ever have," Head Coach Jay Dirksen said. "As a group I think they did very well, it was a great way to get the year started."
For the men, the Huskers placed six runners in the top 15. Jesse Adams paced the pack with an 8K time of 26:28. A junior from Ogallala, Neb., Adams was joined in the top 15 by Trevor Vidlak (3rd), Tommy Brinn (8th), Connor Gibson (9th), Parker Schoen (10th) and Jarren Heng (11th).
"I was really excited to see what Trevor Vidlak did today, he has taken huge strides from where he was at last year," Dirksen said. "The freshmen ran exceptionally well for their first time out and I think it shows that we have a lot of depth as a team."
The Huskers will not hit the practice course for the next two weeks before they host their solo home meet of the year, the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational. Scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 18, the women's 6K race is set for 10 a.m., with the men's 8K race to follow at 10:45 a.m. The Huskers swept the university division titles last season with the women winning their fifth straight title and the men their fourth straight crown.
