Des Moines, Iowa – The Nebraska track and field team continued to be well represented on the fourth day of the USA Championships at Drake Stadium. Epley Bullock, Angee Henry and Ellie Grooters all produced top-eight finishes in their events.
After capping her collegiate career with her sixth career All-America honor in the high jump at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., Bullock went after the best jumpers in the country. The most decorated female high jumper in NU history held her own, as she took fifth with a jump of 6-2. No one in the field was able to hang with Nike’s Chaunte Lowe, who broke her own American record with a clearance at 6-8 3/4.
A two-time national champion in the long jump while at Nebraska, Henry showed that she is now one of the top 400-meter runners in the United States. Henry ran 51.96 in the finals to take sixth-place honors.
In the junior division, Grooters placed fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.94. Grooters, who has already signed a letter of intent with the Huskers for the 2011 season, improved on her ninth-place finish from a year ago.
The night came to a close for the Huskers in the 110-meter hurdle preliminaries, where both Kirkland Thornton and Tyrell Ross were looking to advance. Thornton clocked the seventh-best time at 13.72 to earn a spot in tomorrow’s semifinals race at 12:30 and will then try to earn a spot in the finals at 2:50 pm. Ross was unable to advance with a time of 14.04, good enough for 21st.
Drake Stadium’s blue oval will be full of Huskers tomorrow during the final day of the USA Championships, as seven Huskers will be in competition. The meet starts bright and early at 6:30 a.m. with the men’s 20K race walk.
