Mackin Named CoSIDA Academic All-American

The Nebraska softball program added to its nation-leading total of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans on Wednesday, as junior Robin Mackin was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America second team.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

Mackin was one of two pitchers named to the second team and the honor was the second of her career, as she was a second-team CoSIDA Academic All-American at Fresno State in 2007. Mackin is the 19th Husker to earn academic All-America honors, while her selection increased Nebraska’s nation-leading total to 27 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, seven more than any other program.

The Huskers not only lead all softball programs in academic All-America selections, but rank second nationally among all female sports, behind only the Nebraska volleyball team. Mackin’s selection also increased Nebraska’s nation-leading total to 273 all-time CoSIDA Academic All-America selections across all sports.

A native of Newmarket, Ontario, Canada, Mackin carries a 4.0 grade-point average as a psychology/pre-medicine major. One of only five players to earn academic All-America status with a perfect GPA, Mackin is still attending Nebraska as she works to complete her undergraduate degree, although an injury forced her to retire from the sport earlier this month.

Despite battling intense shoulder pain that ultimately ended her playing career, Mackin posted a 12-13 record with a 2.61 ERA and 154 strikeouts in 142.1 innings this season. She still ranks second in career victories and strikeouts among all active non-senior pitchers in Division I.

With Mackin’s selection to the second team, Nebraska has now had a CoSIDA Academic All-American in each of the past three seasons, as Molly Hill earned third-team honors in 2008 and first-team accolades in 2009. The Huskers have produced five academic All-Americans over the last five seasons, while Head Coach Rhonda Revelle has coached 11 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in her 18 seasons, a total that ranks third nationally during that span, just one behind DePaul and Fresno State.
