Four Huskers Earn All-Big 12 Honors

Four Nebraska baseball players were recognized for their efforts Tuesday, as they were named to the Phillips 66 All-Big 12 team selected by the league’s coaches. The group includes first-team selection Adam Bailey (Scottsdale, Ariz.), second team honoree DJ Belfonte (Kansas City, Mo.) and honorable-mention picks Cody Asche (O’Fallon, Mo.) and Kale Kiser (Plano, Texas). It is the first time any of the four players have received All-Big 12 recognition.

Bailey put together an outstanding senior campaign en route to earning first-team honors in the outfield. He finished the 2010 season with a .368 batting average, 18 homers and 69 RBIs, pacing the league in homers, RBIs and total bases (154). He ranks among the league leaders in seven categories, including slugging percentage (.691), hits (sixth), runs (57, seventh) and batting average (ninth). Bailey led Nebraska in both multi-hit (25) and multi-RBI (22) games, becoming the first Husker since Alex Gordon to have more than 20 multi-hit and multi-RBI games in a season.

Belfonte, who also earned first-team Academic All-America honors on Tuesday, earned second-team all-conference laurels. He put together his best season in 2010, hitting .376 with seven homers, 37 RBIs and 13 stolen bases. Belfonte finished the regular season ranked in the top 10 in three categories, including seventh in batting average, sixth in hits (82) and 10th in total bases (122) and became only the second player in school history to lead the Huskers in stolen bases for three consecutive seasons. He tied Bailey for team-high honors with 25 multi-hit contests.

Asche captured All-Big 12 honors for the first time in his career after hitting .311 with 10 homers and 58 RBIs. The sophomore third baseman ranks sixth in the league in RBIs and was second on the team in both homers and RBIs. Asche tied a Big 12 record with three grand slams and totaled 19 multi-hit games and 16 contests with at least two RBIs.

Kiser was the fourth Husker recognized, as the sophomore designated hitter joined Asche as an honorable-mention pick. He finished the year with a .345 average with two homers, 27 RBIs and 49 runs scored. Kiser finished eighth in the Big 12 in on-base percentage and led Nebraska with 25 walks. He also ranked among team leaders in runs scored (second), doubles (14, second), batting average (third) and stolen bases (five, third) while totaling 17 multi-hit contests.
