Austin, Texas - The Nebraska women's tennis team fell to Texas 4-0 in the semifinals of the Big 12 Championships on Saturday afternoon in Austin, Texas. The Huskers dropped to 21-5 on the season. Despite the loss to the Longhorns, NU is still in strong position to make the NCAA Tournament field as an at-large bid.
Texas started off the match winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, each by a score of 8-5, giving them the doubles point and a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. NU's Jennifer Holmberg and Mary Weatherholt were on the brink of winning at No. 3 doubles, but the match wasn't finished after the completion of the other two doubles matches.
The Huskers couldn't get momentum back during singles play, as the Longhorns won the first three completed singles matches, at the 3, 1 and 5 positions, giving them four points and clinching the victory. The remaining three singles matches weren't completed.
While postseason play is still likely for the Huskers, this has already been a historic season for the team. They finished 9-2 in the Big 12, tying for the most conference wins in school history (2005). They also set a school record with 21 wins, and could add to that if the team is invited to the NCAA Tournament in May.
