Evanston, Ill. - The Nebraska women's tennis team's season ended on Saturday after losing to No. 5 Northwestern 4-0 in the second round of the NCAA Championships. The Huskers finish the season with a record of 22-6.
Nebraska, which recorded its first-ever win in the NCAA Championships on Friday against Illinois, fell short in its upset bid over the Wildcats, who advanced to the final 16 for the seventh consecutive season.
Northwestern took the doubles point after winning at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, taking a 1-0 lead into singles play. But while the Huskers rallied from losing the doubles point against Illinois on Friday, Northwestern's singles play was just too strong for Nebraska as it took the first three completed singles matches to earn their fourth point and clinch the match.
The defeat is a disappointing end to the Husker season, but will not overshadow the accomplishments the team made during the year. In addition to setting a school record with 22 dual wins, the Huskers finished third in the Big 12 with a 9-2 conference record, tying for the highest conference finish in team history. Nebraska also won its first-ever NCAA Championships match and was competitive with one of the top teams in the nation in the second round.
